The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints have taken to the court to open their 2013 season. On Monday they hosted the Van Buren County Eaglettes in a game where the Lady Saints just couldn’t find the hoop.
The Eaglettes came out in force during the first quarter, scoring 15 points and never looking back. DeKalb had four points, with Macy Hedge and Julia Curtis each getting a two-pointer.
The Lady Saints would fare better in the second quarter, outscoring Van Buren 10-9, but the Eaglettes would still command the lead, 24-14. Joni Robinson had a three and two-point shot in the second quarter, with Hedge coming away with another two-point shot. There were six missed shots by the Lady Saints at the hoop.
The Eaglettes and the Lady Saints would match points as the second half began, each getting six points. Madison Parsley and Abby Evans each had two-pointers in the third quarter, but the Eaglettes still had the lead, 30-20.
In the fourth quarter the Eaglettes would pull away, getting ten points to DeKalb’s two. The only points for the Lady Saints in the fourth quarter would come from free throws, with seven missed shots at the goal. Van Buren took the win, 40- 22.
Parsley would go two for two on free-throw attempts, with Robinson getting three out of eleven tries. Hedge went one for two, and Evans got one on two attempts.
The previous week the Lady Saints faced Rickman in a match that overpowered the DeKalb girls.
Rickman would come out strong in the first quarter, getting 11 points to DeKalb’s four. Robinson and Hedge each came away with two-point shots.
Rickman came out hard and fast in the second quarter, coming away with 20 points to the Lady Saints’ two. The only points of the quarter for DeKalb would come from free-throws, and Rickman was up, 31-6.
The Lady Saints matched points in the third quarter with each team getting eight. Parsley, Robinson, Hedge, and Curtis would each get two-point scores.
DeKalb would outscore their opponent in the fourth quarter, but it would not be enough. The Lady Saints got ten points to Rickman’s nine, but Rickman had the win, 48-24. Curtis and Sarette Aranda each had a two-pointer, while Leslie Hembree had two.
Hedge went 0-3 on free-throw attempts, while Lera Britt went 0-2. Sophie Cripps went two for two on free-throws in the game.
