The DeKalb Middle School Saints and Lady Saints played their final games of the regular season last week, on the road against Algood and Avery Trace.
On Monday, January 8, the teams traveled to Avery Trace, where DeKalb would have a good night on the court.
In the Lady Saints’ game, DMS scored five in the first period, with a three-point shot by Sophie Adcock, and a two-pointer by Jordyn Agee. Avery Trace stayed right with them, also scoring five.
Agee sank a pair of two-point baskets for the Lady Saints in the second period, while Avery Trace was held to just two. DMS was up 9-7 at the half.
Agee added a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to her tally in the third period, while Aubrey Fuson got on the board with a two-point shot. Avery Trace was held scoreless, putting the Lady Saints up, 16-7.
Sophie Adcock made a couple of two-point baskets for the Lady Saints in the fourth, while Reagan Williams added a free throw point. Avery Trace would get six, but DeKalb claimed the 21-13 victory.
It would be a much closer game for the boys’ game. The Saints would stay close throughout and battle into the fourth period.
The Saints would put six points on the board in the first period, with Elliott Barnes hitting a three-point shot, while Kingston Mills had a two-pointer and J.T. Summers a free throw. Avery Trace was held to five points.
Barnes and Anthony Moore each sank a two-point basket for the Saints in the second, while Preston Taylor had a pair of free throw points. Avery Trace put 11 on the board, going up at halftime, 16-12.
Summer had four free throws and a two-pointer for DeKalb in the third, while Moore added a couple of free throws of his own. Avery Trace was held to five, but still held a 21-20 lead.
Barnes sank a three-point shot for DMS in the fourth, while Taylor added a two-pointer. Mills contributed a free throw point. Avery Trace would come away with nine, and take the 30-26 win.
On Thursday, the teams were in Algood where they faced some tough competition. In the girls’ game, the Lady Saints only scored three in the first period, a three-point shot by Jordyn Agee, while Algood put 10 on the board.
Sophie Adcock sand a pair of two-point baskets for the Lady Saints in the second, while Jerusalem Aldino had one. Algood added another 10, going up 20-9 at the half.
Maggie Hendrixson was the Lady Saint to score in the third, a two-point basket, while Algood piled on 11 more points.
DMS was shut out of the fourth period, while Algood added 13, taking the 44-11 win.
In the boys’ game, it would be much closer and would be decided in overtime.
The Saints put 15 on the board in the first period, with Barnes sinking three three-point baskets, while Summers, Taylor, and Mills each had a two-pointer. Algood was held to seven points.
DeKalb would add 13 more to the board in the second, with a two a three-point shot by Barnes, a pair of two-pointers by Moore, and Summers and Mills each with a two-point shot. Algood came away with eight, giving DeKalb the 28-15 halftime lead.
The Saints put 11 points on the board in the third, with another two and three-pointer by Barnes, and two-pointers by Summer, Hartley Hannah, and Mills. Algood cut the lead with 11 points. DMS was up 39-28.
Hannah and Mills would each have a two-point basket for the Saints in the fourth, while Moore added a couple of free throws. Unfortunately, Algood came out hot and would send the game into overtime at 43-43.
It would be Algood that would take the night, shutting out DeKalb in overtime, and taking the 54-43 win.
