The DeKalb Middle School Saints and Lady Saints faced off with teams from Watertown on Nov. 11. While the boys had a hard-fought game, the girls came away with a win.
The Lady Saints took to the court first and fell behind in the first period. DeKalb came away with nine points to Watertown’s 11. Madison Parsley and Joni Robinson each had a two-pointer, while Macy Hedge had two.
The second quarter was a mirror image of the first, with DeKalb getting 11 points and Watertown nine. Parsley, Hedge and Julia Curtis each had a two-pointer, and the score was tied 20-20 at the half.
The Lady Saints pulled away in the third period, scoring eight to Watertown’s three. Robinson and Hedge each shot a three-pointer, while Abbi Taylor found the basket for two. DeKalb took the lead, 28-23.
The game remained close in the fourth. Robinson and Curtis each shot two-pointers, while Abby Evans had two. Watertown scored 14 points in the period, but it wasn’t enough. DeKalb took the well-earned victory, 41-37.
Evans went eight for 10 on free throws, with Hedge going three for six. Both Curtis and Robinson were zero for two, while Parsley was zero for one.
The Saints faced their Watertown counterparts in the next game. While the girls took a win, the boys had a little more trouble.
DMS fell behind early, getting only seven points to Watertown’s 18. Tanner Poss had a three-pointer in the first period, while Tyler Cantrell had two two-pointers.
The Saints fought back hard in the second quarter, outscoring Watertown 20-12. Bradley Miller had three two-pointers, while Cantrell had a three-pointer and a two-pointer. Logan Painter had a two-point shot. Watertown kept a slim lead at the half, 30-27.
Watertown came back strong in the third, outscoring the Saints, 13-8. Miller, Trey Jones, and Cantrell each had a two-pointer in the period, but Watertown was up, 43-35.
The Saints kept the game close in the fourth, but Watertown was able to come away with the 58-48 win. Austin Johnson and Poss each had two two-pointers in the period, while Colter Norris got a three-point basket.
Marshal Evins went two for three on free throws, while Miller went four for six. Painter was two for six, while Poss was two for four. Cantrell went one for three, while Jones was zero for one.
