After taking a scheduled break on their schedule during the Thanksgiving holiday, the DeKalb Middle School basketball teams were back in action last week. The teams traveled to White County to take on teams from Sparta.
In the Lady Saints' match up, the game was tight throughout and came down to the fourth quarter. In the first quarter it was all Chloe VanVraken for the Lady Saints, scoring a pair of three-point baskets. Sparta would pull ahead, scoring 10 points.
Bella Dakas scored the only two points for the Lady Saints in the second quarter, both off of free throws. But Sparta was held to only one point, with DeKalb inching closer at the half, 11-8.
The Lady Saints came out ready to play in the third quarter, scoring seven points. Laurie Rigsby had a three-pointer, while Dakas had a two-point shot. Avery Agee added a couple of points from free throws. Sparta was held to four points, with DMS tying the score, 15-15.
VanVraken, Dare Collins, and Agee each had a two-pointer for the Lady Saints in the fourth quarter. Sparta was held to only one point, giving the Lady Saints the 21-16 victory.
In the boys' game, the game was close in the beginning, but the Saints would soon pull away big time. The Saints scored six points in the first quarter, with Dallas Kirby getting a pair of two-point shots, while Devin Fish and Ty Webb each had a free throw point. Sparta kept right with them, scoring six points of their own.
In the second quarter, the Saints opened things up, putting 17 points on the board. Cody Love had a three-pointer, a pair of two-point shots, and a free throw, while Seth Fuson, Ian Barnes, and Maddox Hale each had a three-point basket of their own. Sparta was held to only five points, giving DMS the 23-11 halftime lead.
The Saints added seven points in the third quarter, with Love getting a three-point basket, Fish a two-pointer, and Jordan Parker two points from free throws. Sparta was held to eight points, with DMS holding a 30-19 lead.
DMS scored six points in the fourth quarter with Kirby, Owen Snipes, and Barnes each getting a two-point basket. It would be too much for Sparta who only scored five points. The Saints took a big 36-24 win.
