The DeKalb Middle School Saints and Lady Saints wrapped up their regular basketball season last week on the road against Gordonsville, then traveled to Prescott Middle for a make-up game.
On Jan. 13, DeKalb traveled to Gordonsville for the last regularly scheduled games of the season. In the girls’ game, points were at a premium on both sides of the court. The Lady Saints scored only one point in the first period, that coming from a free throw. Gordonsville came away with only two points however, giving them the early lead.
The Lady Saints scored seven points in the second period, including a three-pointer by Joni Robinson, and a two-point basket by Julia Curtis. Gordonsville was held to four points, giving DeKalb the 8-6 lead at the half.
In the third period, DeKalb only had two points, with a two-point shot by Macy Hedge. Gordonsville had nine points, giving the lead back to the Lady Tigers, 15-10.
The Lady Saints put up eight points in the fourth, with two two-pointers by Madison Parsley, and two-point shots by Robinson and Curtis. Gordonsville was held to five points, but that was enough for the 20-18 win.
Abby Evans went one for eight on free throws, while Abbi Taylor was one for four, and Sophie Cripps was one for two.
In the boys’ game, the Saints found themselves in a battle. The score went back and forth, but it would be the Tigers that would come out on top.
The Saints scored nine points in the first period, with a three-pointer by Austin Johnson, two two-pointers by Trey Jones, and a two-point shot by Marshal Evins. Gordonsville had 11 points, taking the early lead.
The Saints came back in the second period, scoring seven points and holding Gordonsville to only two. Evins had a three-pointer, and Johnson and Tanner Poss each had a two-point basket. DeKalb took the lead at the half, 16-13.
Gordonsville came back fired up in the third, getting 10 points and holding DeKalb to only two, both from free throws. Gordonsville was back on top, 23-18.
The Saints came away with eight points in the fourth, including a three-pointer by Johnson, and two two-point shots by Jones. Gordonsville scored nine, taking the 32-26 win.
Evins and Johnson were each one for three on free throws, while Bradley Miller went one for two.
On Jan. 14, DMS traveled to Prescott Middle School to play games originally scheduled for Jan. 6. The games had been rescheduled due to ice and snow on the roadways.
In the girls’ game, it looked like it would be another tough loss for the Lady Saints, but the team made a big comeback in the second half.
The Lady Saints scored four points in the first period, with two-pointers by Robinson and Curtis. Prescott scored seven points and took the early lead.
DeKalb was held to another four points in the second period, including a two-point shot by Cripps. Prescott looked to sail away with the game, scoring nine points and taking a 16-8 lead at halftime.
The Lady Saints came out ready to play in the third period, scoring eight points and holding Prescott to four. Hedge and Curtis each had a two-point basket. Prescott still held the lead into the fourth, 20-16.
DMS opened up in the fourth period, scoring 15 points with the defense holding Prescott to only two. Parsley and Robinson each had two two-pointers, while Hedge and Evans each had a two-point basket. DeKalb came away with a big win, 31-22.
Curtis went two for four on free throws, while Robinson was two for three. Parsley and Taylor were each two for two, Hedge was one for two, Evans zero for three, and Cripps was zero for two.
In the boys’ game, the Saints fell behind early. DeKalb scored four points in the first period, with two-point goals by Jones and Poss. Prescott took 11 points and the lead.
The Saints had seven points in the second period, with a two and three-pointer by Tyler Cantrell and a two-pointer by Jones. Prescott had 10 points, adding to their lead, 21-11.
In the third period, the Saints once again came away with seven points, including two two-point goals by Jones. Prescott added to their lead with 12 more points, 33-18.
Cantrell had a two and three-point shot in the fourth period, but that’s the only points the Saints would see. Prescott ended the game with 13 points, taking a 46-23 win.
Jones went two for two on free throws, while Evins was one for two, Miller was zero for four, and Cantrell was zero for one.
