DeKalb West School basketball teams played two games last week, before taking their Christmas break. Both games were on the road, playing one night in Cannon County, and another at Southside.
On Monday, December 13, the teams were in Woodbury where they would face the Lady Lions and Lions. DWS would be taking on the best players Cannon County has to offer.
In the Lady Bulldogs’ game, DWS only scored two points in the first period, with a two-point basket by McKenna Miller. The Lady Lions would get only five points, but would hold the early lead.
Sophie Desimone scored the only points for the Lady Bulldogs in the second period, with a two-point shot. Cannon would pull away with eight points, and the 14-4 lead at the half.
Kenadee Prichard and Desimone each had a two-pointer for the Lady Bulldogs in the third period, but the Lady Lions came away with 14. Cannon held a 28-8 lead.
The Lady Bulldogs would end the game with another nine points on the board. Desimone sank a two-pointer and a free throw, while Abby Jo Crook, Jordyn Agee, and Millie Barton each had a two-pointer of their own. Cannon was held to nine, but it was plenty for the 35-17 win.
In the boys’ game, the Bulldogs would have a much tougher night. DWS only scored three points in the first period, with a two-pointer by Chase Young and a free throw by Nick Murphy. The Lions piled on the points with 18.
The Bulldogs were held to only two points in the second period. Kolby Slager sank the only two-pointer of the period for DWS. Meanwhile, Cannon added another 19 to the board, taking a 37-5 lead at halftime.
DWS came away with seven points in the third period. Conner Talley hit a three-pointer, while Ben Driver sank a two-point basket. Porter Hancock and J.T. Summers each had a free throw point. Cannon put 12 more on the board, increasing their lead, 49-12.
The Bulldogs only added four points to the scoreboard in the fourth, with two-pointers by Young and Presley Merriman. The Lions ended the game with 11 points, taking the 60-17 win.
On Thursday, December 16, the teams were again on the road, this time at Southside.
In the Lady Bulldogs’ game, DWS would keep things close throughout the game, with the match decided in the fourth period.
DeKalb scored four points in the first period, with two-pointers by Abby Jo Crook and McKenna Miller. Southside would take the early lead with seven points.
The Lady Bulldogs only scored two in the second period, with a two-point basket by Sophie Desimone. Southside pulled away with four and an 11—6 lead at the half.
Crook sank a three-point shot for DWS in the third period, with Jordyn Agee, Desimone, and Millie Barton each getting two-pointers. Southside was held to just two points, giving the Lady Bulldogs a 15-13 lead.
Miller and Desimone each had a two-point shot for DeKalb in the fourth period, but Southside would turn things up, scoring 10. Southside took the 23-19 win.
The Bulldogs would have a better outcome in their game. DWS scored six points in the opening period, with Porter Hancock sinking a two-pointer and a couple of free throws, while Ethan Brown got a two-pointer of his own. Southside was held to just three points.
Chase Young got on the board for the Bulldogs in the second period, with a pair of two-point baskets. Conner Talley and Ben Barton each had a two-point shot for themselves. Southside came away witgh seven points, giving DWS a 14-10 halftime lead.
Once again Young was hot for the Bulldogs in the third, with three two-point shots. Talley also added a two-point basket. But Southside turned up the heat and added 12 points to their side of the scoreboard. The game was tied at 22.
DWS scored 10 points in the final period, with Young getting a whopping four two-point shots, while Hancock added one. Southside was held to just six points, giving the Bulldogs the hard-fought 32-28 victory.
