The DeKalb West School basketball teams wrapped up their regular season last week with one final home game against Tuckers Crossroads last Thursday, then some make up games the following day.
In Thursday's Lady Bulldogs game, DWS started off slow. The team only scored two points in the first quarter, off of a two-point basket by Bryna Pelham. Tuckers Crossroads came away with six points and the early lead.
The Lady Bulldogs got things going in the second quarter, scoring seven points. Jordyn Agee sank a three-pointer, while Pelham and Caroline Crook each had a two-point shot. TXR put up eight points, taking the 14-9 halftime lead.
Abby Crook had a two-point shot for the Lady Bulldogs in the third quarter, while Agee scored a free throw point. TXR was held to four points, but again increased their lead, 18-12.
The Lady Bulldogs really came to life in the fourth quarter, putting 11 points on the board. Emily Young had a pair of two-pointers, while Agee had one and a free throw point. Caroline Crook also had a two-point basket, while Abby Crook added two free throw points. Pelham also had a free throw. With DWS finding the hoops, they also held TXR to only three points. In the end, the Lady Bulldogs pulled out the 23-21 victory.
In the boys' game, the Bulldogs would not be so fortunate. DWS score seven points in the first quarter, with Wesley Kent sinking a three-pointer, while Ben Barton and Chase Young each had a two-point shot. Tuckers Crossroad stayed right with them however, scoring nine points and taking the lead.
Kent had another three-point shot for the Bulldogs in the second quarter, but that would be the only points DWS would see. Meanwhile, TXR put 12 more points on the scoreboard and jumped their lead up, 21-10, at halftime.
Young and Ethan Brown each had a two-point shot for DWS in the third quarter, but TXR would add nine more. Tuckers was up, 30-14.
Barton had a three-point basket in the fourth quarter, while Conner Talley and Young each had a two-point shot. It would not be enough, as TXR padded their score with 10 points. They would take the 40-21 win.
The following evening the teams were back in action, this time playing some make-up games. The Lady Bulldogs faced off with Eastside from Cannon County, while the Bulldogs took on Southside from Wilson County.
In the girls' game, the score would remain close throughout and come down to the final quarter. The Lady Bulldogs scored five points in the first quarter with Agee sinking a two and three-point basket. Eastside got seven points and the first lead of the game.
Agee added a three-point shot for the Lady Bulldogs in the second quarter, while Pelham, Caroline Crook, and Abby Crook each sank a two-point basket. Eastside was held to eight points, but kept the lead at the half, 15-14.
The Lady Bulldogs only scored three points in the third quarter, with a two-pointer and a free throw by Agee. However, Eastside looked to run away with the game, getting nine points, and increasing their lead, 24-17.
Pelham, Caroline Crook, and Agee each had a two-point shot for the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth quarter, while Eastside was held to only two points. DWS made a big comeback, but it was not enough. Eastside took the win, 26-23.
For the Bulldogs' game against Southside, things would not be so close. DWS was shutout of the first quarter, while Southside put up 11 points.
Grant Buterbaugh got DWS on the board in the second quarter, with one free throw. Southside added 15, taking a 26-1 halftime lead.
Buterbaugh and Barton each had a two-point shot for the Bulldogs in the third quarter, but Southside added eight points to their score. They were up, 34-5.
Kolby Slager and Kent each had a two-point basket for the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter, while Barton added a free throw point. Southside added 11 points, taking the 45-10 victory.
