It's basketball time and the DeKalb West School opened up their season with games against Wilson Elementary School and a tournament played at Gordonsville.
On Thursday, October 29, the DWS Lady Bulldogs took on Wilson Elementary in a close game to the end. Caroline Crook and Emily Young each had two pointers in the first quarter, along with a free throw by Bryna Pellham. Wilson's Mahayla Riley had a three-pointer, but DWS was up, 5-3.
Jordyn Agee added a three-point shot for the Lady Bulldogs in the second quarter, but Anna Riddle and Hailey Craven each had two points for Wilson, inching them closer, 8-7.
Crook had another two-pointer for DWS in the third quarter, with Pelham and Sophie Desimone each making a free throw shot. However, Riley and Craven each had two-pointers for Wilson, along with two free throw points by Madison Smith. Wilson took the lead, 13-12.
Wilson was held to only one point in the fourth quarter, a free throw by Smith, while DWS poured it on. Pelham and Crook each made two free throws, while Young added a two-pointer. Agee added a two-point shot and a free throw, giving the Lady Bulldogs nine fourth quarter points and the 21-14 victory.
It the boys' game, the Bulldogs would also play a close game, but pull away in the second half. Tyler Jackson had four two-pointers in the first quarter, with Chase Young adding a two-pointer himself. Eli Hood and Mark Anderson each had a two-point shot for Wilson, while Gus Bryan added a three-pointer. DWS was in the lead, 10-7.
Jackson had a two-pointer for the Bulldogs in the second quarter, with Kenson Moss netting a three-point shot. Wilson's Anderson had a pair of two-pointers, and a three-point shot, with Bryan adding another two-pointer. Wilson took the lead at the half, 16-15.
Grant Buterbaugh and Conner Talley each had a free throw shot in the third quarter, while Jackson added two more two-point shots. Wilson was held to only two points, a two-pointer by Anderson. DWS was back on top, 21-18.
Jackson had two more two-pointers in the fourth quarter, with Wesley Kent also coming away with a two-point shot. Wilson was held to only three points, a two-pointer and a free throw by Bryan. The Bulldogs would take the 27-21 win.
The outcomes would be different for the DWS teams later in the week as they traveled to Gordonsville to take part in the Forks River Basketball Tournament. It would be a tough day for both the girls' and boys' teams.
In the girls' game, the Lady Bulldogs would face off against a team from Defeated, and would be held scoreless in the first quarter. Emry Jones would put up a two-pointer and a free throw for Defeated, with Darcy Claywell and Amber Spivey each adding a free throw. Defeated was up, 5-0.
The Lady Bulldogs came to life in the second quarter with Desimone getting a three-pointer, Abby Jo Crook a two-pointer, Caroline Crook two free throw points, and Pelham one free throw. Defeated however was also hot, with Jones and Haley Ray Overstreet each getting a two-pointer, Spivey two two-pointers and three free throws, and Claywell a two-pointer and two free throws. Defeated stretched their lead, 20-8.
Young would get a two-point shot in the third quarter, with Pelham adding a free throw. As it would turn out, it would be the last points the Lady Bulldogs would get in the game. Macy Christian would get a three-pointer and a two-point shot for Defeated in the third quarter, with Jones and Spivey each adding a two-point shot. Spivey would add a two-pointer in the fourth quarter, giving Defeated the 30-11 win.
The boys would take on Gordonsville in the tournament and would see the same results. The Bulldogs would get only three points in the first quarter, off of a two-pointer by Kent and a free throw by Buterbaugh. Gordonsville opened things up, scoring big. James Peoples had a three-point and a two-point shot, while Dalton Hancock had three two-pointers. Jay Foster and Brady Sykes each had a pair of two-pointers, while Clinton Pope had one. Gordonsville took a 23-3 lead.
It wouldn't get any better in the second quarter. Jackson had a two-point shot for the Bulldogs, while Buterbaugh added another free throw. Foster had a three and two-pointer for Gordonsville, while Pope had three two-pointers, and Sykes had two. Gordonsville was up, 38-6.
The Bulldogs were held scoreless in the third quarter, while Gordonsville continued to pile on the points. Foster added a three-pointer and two two-point shots, while Sykes had two two-pointers and two free throws, and Hancock a two-point shot. Gordonsville's lead grew to 53-6.
Buterbaugh added the lone point for the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter off of a free throw. Gordonsville added only three points, and took the 56-7 victory.
