DWS Plays at Home and on the Road

The DeKalb West School Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs were back on the hardwood last week, with home games against MJCA and taking a road trip to Union Heights early in the week, before coming home again to face off against Trousdale on Thursday.

On Monday, November 18, the teams were on their home court as they took on MJCA. In the Lady Bulldogs game, the hometown girls would struggle.

DWS scored three points in the first period, with a two-pointer by Kaylee Womack and a free throw by Katy Jo Bowen. Meanwhile, MJCA put up 10 on the board.

Katelyn Fry scored the one lone free throw point for the Lady Bulldogs in the second period, while MJCA added another 10. DWS was down 20-4 at the half.

The Lady Bulldogs scored another three in the third, with a two-point basket by Bowen and a free throw by Fry, but MJCA kept rolling with nine more points.

Fry would add a two-point shot to the board for DWS in the fourth, while MJCA sealed the game with eight, taking the 37-10 win.

The Bulldogs would have a much better night. DWS put 15 on the board in the first period, with three two-pointers and a pair of free throws by Maddux Pyburn, a couple of two-point baskets by Aiden Garza, a two by Levi Cripps, and a free throw by Landon Holmes. MJCA was held to just two points.

DeKalb kept piling on the points in the second, with a three and a two by Pyburn, a pair of two-pointers by Grady Thomason, and a two-point shot by Cripps. MJCA was held scoreless, giving DWS the 26-2 halftime lead.

Holmes hit a two-point shot for the Bulldogs in the third, while Bentley Watley had a pair of free throw points and Cripps had one. MJCA came to life, scoring 10 points, cutting the lead 32-12.

The Bulldogs ended the game with another 11 points. Thomason, Watley, John Byrd, and Holmes each had a two-pointer, while Levi Reynolds hit a three. Cripps had a free throw point. MJCA scored another 12, but DeKalb claimed the 43-24 victory.

DeKalb West next took a road trip, this time to take on teams from Union Heights. The girls would once again struggle to find the hoop.

Katy Jo Bowen scored the only points for the Lady Bulldogs in the first period, a two-point basket. UHS inched away with four points.

Bowen scored a free throw point for the Lady Bulldogs in the second, while Adysen Olivas hit a two-pointer. Union Heights was held to one point, tying the game at 5 at the half.

DWS was scoreless in the third, while UHS got rolling with seven points, taking the 12-5 lead.

Bowen added a two-pointer for DWS in the fourth, but that was all they could muster.  UHS would add six and take the 18-7 win.

The Bulldogs would have a dominating night in their game. Cripps, Pyburn, Holmes, and Kaden Mullinax would each have a two-point basket to start the game, while UHS skipped ahead with 11 points.

Things would tighten up in the second, with DeKalb coming away with 12 points. Cripps hit a three and a pair of twos, while Lucas Nokes added a pair of two-pointers. Pyburn had a free throw. UHS came away with nine, tying the game at 20 at the half.

The Bulldogs caught fire in the third, scoring 23 points. Cripps hit a two and a pair of threes, while Pyburn had a couple of two-pointers, a three, and four free throw points. Holmes added a couple of two-pointers. UHS was held to eight, giving DWS the 42-28 lead.

DeKalb didn’t let up in the fourth, with Mullinax hitting a couple of twos, while Cripps, Pyburn, Garza, Nokes, and John Byrd each had one. Levi Reynolds added a free throw. UHS came away with 11, but the Bulldogs held the 58-37 victory.

The following Thursday the teams her back in front of the hometown crowd as they hosted Trousdale County. It would be a very hard loss for the Lady Bulldogs.

DWS would only score two points in the game, a two-pointer by Fry, while Hartsville had eight in the first, nine in the second, 12 in the third, and two in the fourth. The Lady Bulldogs would fall 31-2.

It would be a closer game for the Bulldogs, but they would fall behind early and struggle to play catchup. DWS scored five in the first period, on a three by Cripps, and a two by Holmes. Hartsville pulled away with 17 points.

Cripps had a two-pointer for the Bulldogs in the second, while Pyburn had a three-point shot. Holmes added a free throw. Hartsville also added six, taking the 23-11 halftime lead.

Holmes hit a pair of threes for DWS in the third, while Cripps had a two-pointer, and Pyburn a couple of free throws. Trousdale matched DeKalb point for point, keeping a 33-21 lead.

The Bulldogs added another 10 points in the fourth, with a two-point basket and four free throws by Pyburn, and two pointers by Cripps and Holmes. Hartsville added 11 and claimed the 44-31 win.
