







The DeKalb Middle School basketball teams were back on the hardwood last week, finishing one more set of games before the new year. Before the games, eighth grade players and cheerleaders were honored during Eighth Grade Night.
On Monday, Dec. 14, during a scheduled home court match against Algood Middle School, the eighth graders were escorted by their parents and recognized during a ceremony. Those acknowledged were Cheer Captain Megyn Patterson, Madeline Martin, Cheer Captain Sara Moore, Macy Anderson, Hannah Keith, Cody Love, Maddox Hale, Ty Webb, Jordan Parker, Avery Agee, Dare Collins, Annabella Dakas, Laurie Rigsby, Manager Andrew Dakas, Dallas Kirby, Seth Fuson, Owen Snipes, and Ian Barnes.
In the girls' game, the Lady Saints fell behind early and would never take the lead. DMS scored seven points in the first quarter, with Chloe Vanvraken getting a three-point basket, while Laurie Rigsby had a two-pointer. Dare Collins added a couple of points from free throws. Algood scored 11 points, taking the early lead.
The Lady Saints only scored two points in the second quarter with Bella Dakas sinking a two-pointer. AMS added to their scored, coming away with 15 points. At halftime, they were up 26-9.
DMS finally came to life in the third quarter, scoring 10 points. VanVraken had a three-pointer and three free throw points, while Avery Agee and Collin each had a two-point basket. Algood scored 13 points, holding a firm 39-19 lead.
The Lady Saints put 18 points on the board in the fourth quarter, with Collins getting a three and two-point shot and a couple of free throws, while VanVraken had a two-pointer and three free throws. Also, Agee and Rigsby each had a three-pointer. It would be for from enough. AMS scored 16 points of their own, and took the 55-37 victory.
The boys' game would be a much more exciting match, with the lead going back and forth until the end.
The Saints started the game by putting 10 points on the board. Owen Snipes had a two-point basket and a couple of free throw points, while Devin Fish had a two-pointer and one free throw. Jordan Parker also added a three-point shot to the board. Algood was held to just a two-pointer, giving the Saints the 10-2 lead.
DMS was held to only five points in the second quarter, with Cody Love coming away with a three-point basket, while Seth Fuson sank a two-pointer. However, AMS came roaring back, scoring 18 points and taking a 20-15 halftime lead.
Snipes had a pair of two-pointers and a free throw for the Saints in the third quarter, while Dallas Kirby had a two-point shot and a pair of free throw points. Fish had a three-point basket and Parker added a free throw point. AMS was held to six points, giving the Saints the 28-26 lead.
It all came down to the fourth quarter and the Saints only scored three points from a couple of free throws by Maddox Hale, and a free throw by Snipes. But Algood was held to zero points, giving the Saints the 31-26 victory.
The Saints will be off until January 4, when they face Van Buren at home.
