Marshal Evins took home enough hardware to fill a trophy case this past week as he was named Most Valuable Player of the DeKalb County High School basketball team during ceremonies at the annual basketball banquet.
Evins heard his name called for most of the evening as he not only netted the coveted MVP award but the class of 2018 salutatorian also took home the Smartest Player Award, the Best Defender Award, the Hustle Award. Those were in addition to state recognitions which included being on the third team all-district squad and on the district all-defensive team. He help lead the Tigers to a 13-14 record this past season.
While Evins was being lauded for his role as a senior leader on the Tiger squad, it was a sophomore who was conferred the honor of MVP for the Lady Tigers as Emme Colwell earned the honor. Not only was she cited as MVP, she was also given the Most Improved Player Award as well as the Best Shooter Award. She was named second team all-district. The Lady Tigers went 12-19 this past season.
Cheering them on to victory, Hannah Evans was named MVP of the cheerleading squad. She was joined in the cheerleading awards by Malla Stanley who was cited for Best Jumps and Holly Evans who was lauded as the Best Dancer. Amelia Patterson got Best Cheer and Zoe Maynard Best Jumps while Olivia Winter won Most Spirited. Madison Mick got the STAR Award for spirit, team, attitude and respect.
Other top awards given out during the banquet included, for the Lady Tigers, Mya Ruch as Best Ball Handler and Best Defensive Player (she also made the district all-defensive team), Maddison Parsley for Best Passer and Smartest Player, Mallori Hart for Best Sixth Man, Lydia Brow for Best Free Throw Shooter, Sophie Cripps for Best Attitude, and Megan Walker for Best Rebounder and Toughest Player and Kenzie France as Most Improved.
As for the Tigers, Tanner Poss was conferred the Best Offensive Player and Best Athlete awards and was named to the first string all-district team while Colter Norris was given the Best Free Throw, Best Passer and Best Ball Handler awards.
Dallas Cook took home Most Improved while Trey Jones was Best Rebounder and had the Best Attitude. Alan Munoz was the Best Practice Player and Nathan Atkins the Best Playmaker. Austin Johnson was cited as Best Sixth Man.
