



The DeKalb Middle School basketball teams were back on their home court last week, taking on teams from Cannon County and Algood. It would be a tough week for the Lady Saints
On Monday, November 15, the Lady Saints faced the Lionettes of Cannon County, and could just not get any momentum. DMS scored seven points in the first period, all from Lillie Young. She sank a three-pointer and a pair of two-point baskets. After DMS took a 7-0 lead, Cannon County scored 10 unanswered points before the end of the quarter.
Larissa Mooneyham had a two-pointer for the Lady Saints in the second period, with Bella Rackley adding a couple of free throw points. Cannon extended their lead with seven more points, taking a 17-11 lead at the half.
Rackley scored DMS’s lone point in the third period with a free throw shot, while Cannon poured it on with 11 points. The Liontettes took a 28-12 lead.
The Lady Saints scored 10 points in the fourth period, with a pair of three-point shots by Addison Murphy and two-pointers by Belen Garcia and Maggie Hendrixson. Cannon padded their score with 12 points, taking the 42-22 win.
In the boys’ game, the score would be much closer but still not the results they had hoped for.
The Saints would score nine points in the first period, with a pair of two-point baskets and a free throw by Jon Hendrix and a couple of two-pointers by Devin Fish. The Lions came away with 15 points and the early lead.
DMS got seven points in the second period, with Hendrix getting a two-pointer and a free throw, while Fish and Kiece Hannah each had a two-point shot. Cannon padded their lead with 14, taking a 29-16 lead at the half.
The Saints got fired up in the third period, getting 12 points. Logan Duke had a three-point basket, while Fish and Jamison Troncoso each had a two-pointer. Hannah had a two-point shot and a free throw. The Lions were held to 11 points but still commanded a 40-28 lead.
Fish had a three-pointer for the Saints in the fourth, while Hendrix and Duke each sank a two-point shot. Cannon was held to eight points, but it was plenty for the 48-35 victory.
On Thursday, November 18, DMS was back in action as they hosted teams from Algood. Once again the girls would find points hard to come by.
The Lady Saints were held scoreless in the first period, while Algood tacked on 14 points.
Things weren’t much better for the girls in the second period, with Lillie Young getting a two-point shot and Mooneyham adding a free throw point. Algood added 13 more points, taking a 27-3 halftime lead.
The Lady Saints only scored three in the third period, with a three-point basket by Rackley. Algood piled on the points with eight and a 35-6 lead.
Young scored the only point for the Lady Saints in the fourth period with a free throw. Algood added eight more, giving them the 43-7 win.
The Saints would fare better in their match, though the score would remain close through much of the game. DMS scored 13 points in the first period, with Hendrix getting a two-pointer and a pair of three-point baskets. Fish had a couple of two-point shots and a free throw. Algood came away with 11 points, giving DMS a narrow 13-11 lead.
Fish and Troncoso each had a two-pointer in the second period, while Algood put five points on the board. As the half ended, the Saints held a 17-16 lead.
DMS came away with seven points in the third period, with Duke sinking a three-pointer, and Hendrix and Troncoso each getting a two-pointer. Algood was held to just one point, giving DeKalb the 24-17 lead.
Things got hot in the fourth period, with the Saints scoring 13 points. Duke had a three-point shot and a pair of free throws, while Troncoso had a couple of two-point shots. Hendrix also had a three-pointer, while Fish added a free throw point. Algood was also hot, scoring 12 points. But it would not be enough. The Saints claimed the 37-29 victory.
