The DeKalb Senior Tigers wrapped up a three-game stand at home when they hosted the Smith County Owls Saturday morning at Vanhooser Stadium in Smithville, and put a pin in the Owls’ balloon with a 6-0 overtime win.

 

The team from Smith County was undefeated and tied with Overton County for first place in the conference when they came to Smithville. They left in third place, sitting behind the second-place Tigers in the rankings. The defensive melee took the two teams into an extra period tied at 0-0.

 

DeKalb Quarterback Kolter Kilgore finally found Grayson Hendrix in the end zone for the first score of the game in overtime to upset the Owls and slide into second place in the conference. After stopping Smith County at the goal line, the Tigers located the end zone on third down to take the win.

 

The Tiger defense forced two turnovers in the game, while holding the Owls to 68 yards offensively. Matt Vickers, Desmond Nokes and Shadie Rankhorn recorded three tackles each, while Brady Hale, Issac Knowles, Josh May and Colby Barnes each had one tackle.

 

On offense for DeKalb, Issac Knowles rushed for 68 yards on 18 carries, Desmond Nokes ran the ball 13 times to gain 45 yards. Matt Vickers added 13 yards to the Tiger rushing effort.

 

The DeKalb Junior Tigers also wrestled second place in the conference from Smith County Saturday with a 12-6 win.

 

Coming in to the second half tied 6-6, the Tiger defense buckled down, allowing only 30 yards of total offense in the last two quarters of the game. DeKalb Quarterback Briz Trapp, however, hit Conner Close with a pass early in the third quarter, and Close broke free with a 55-yard run to the goal line, putting the tigers ahead by six. DeKalb would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the contest.

 

Trapp went 3 for 3 passing, logging 70 yards and a touchdown, while Konner Young helped out by averaging 7.5 yards per carry and running for 75 yards and a touchdown in the first half. Mason Winter gained 16 yards on four carries, and Ryan Thompson, and Briz Trapp had five yards each on the ground. DeKalb gained a total of 159 yards on offense for the game.

 

Gabe Hollingsworth led the Tiger defensive effort with five tackles, while Ryan Thompson, Trey Crabtree, Stetson Agee, Briz Trapp, Konner Young and Luke Midgett had three. Mason Winter and Kaleb Spears added one tackle each, and DeKalb prevented the Owls fromn gaining any yardage through the air.

 

The Pee Wee Tigers rounded out the DeKalb effort Saturday by giving Smith County another 6-0 beating.

 

DeKalb broke the winning score late in the third quarter when Nick Murphy ripped a 43-yard dash to the end zone to put the Tigers up 6-0. Murphy led the Tiger offense with 52 yards rushing and a touchdown. Jon Hendrix rushed for 12 yards, and Jacob Stewart added 5.

 

Murphy also led the DeKalb defense with six tackles, Gracin South and Cole McMillen each put two tackles on the books, and Blaine Atnip and Jon Hendrix added one tackle each.

 

The Junior Pro teams will travel to Cookeville Saturday to meet the Cavaliers. The Pee Wee Tigers will start the action at 4 p.m.

 

The young Tigers will return home on Oct. 10 for homecoming.
