The DeKalb West School Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs basketball teams were back in action last week, on the road taking on teams from Watertown and Tuckers Crossroads.
On Tuesday, November 10, DeKalb West traveled to Watertown, with the Lady Bulldogs starting things off in what would be a tough game.
Bryna Pelham scored the only two points for DWS in the first quarter, both off of free throws, while Watertown got 12 points. Bianca Smithy had a pair of three-point shots and a two pointer, while Julianna Pruitt had a two-point shot. Shayla Allison and Molly Followill each had one point off of free throws.
The Lady Bulldogs came away with six points in the second quarter, with Emily Young getting a two-pointer and two points off of free throws, while Jordyn Agee had two points from free throws. Watertown extended their lead however, with Allison getting a two-point shot and two free throws, and Lexie Snider and Macie Brelje each getting a two-pointer. Watertown was up 20-8.
Agee scored the lone point for the Lady Bulldogs in the third period, coming off of a free throw. Watertown got 12 points, with Allison and Followill each getting a pair of two-pointers, Brelje a two-point shot, and Ty Bates two points from free throws. Watertown commanded a 32-9 lead.
McKenna Miller added a two-pointer to the DWS score in the fourth quarter, with Agee adding a free throw point. Watertown sealed the victory with six more points, two-pointers by Pruitt, Haley Knapp, and Followill. Watertown won, 38-12.
The boys' game would be no different. Kenson Moss would score the lone point for DWS in the first quarter, while Watertown put up 12 points. Marcus Reynolds had three two-pointers and a free throw, while Jeremiah Martinez and Carter Bass each had one two-point shot. Sosa Weir added a free throw point.
Tyler Jackson added one point to the scoreboard for the Bulldogs in the second quarter, while Watertown piled it on with 14 points. Reynolds had three two-pointers, while Nolan Cozart had two. Weir and Peyton Laws each had one two-point shot. Watertown was up, 26-2.
The Bulldogs finally got into the game after the half, with Jackson getting a pair of two-pointers, Wesley Kent getting one, and Grant Buterbaugh getting a free throw point. Watertown tacked on 15 more, with Reynolds getting a three-pointer and two two-point shots, Martinez three two-pointers, Daric Carter getting a two-pointer. Watertown's lead increased 41-9.
Conner Talley and Ethan Brown each had two-point shots for DWS in the fourth, with Jackson getting a couple of points from free throws, and Ben Barton getting one point. Watertown's Mark Estes would score a three-pointer, and seal the 44-16 win.
On Thursday, November 12, the teams traveled to Tuckers Crossroads, where the Lady Bulldogs would have a much better night.
It would be a slow start for the Lady Bulldogs, with no points scored in the first quarter, but TC was held to just two off of free throws by Jamie Simms.
DWS got things going in the second, with a pair of three-pointers by Agee, a two-pointer by Caroline Crook, and two points off of free throws by Abby Crook and Lauren Fry. TC was held to just one point, a free throw by Simms. The Lady Bulldogs held a 10-3 lead at the half.
The Lady Bulldogs were held scoreless in the third quarter, while Simms had a two-point shot and a free throw for TC. Tuckers Crossroads inched closer, 10-5.
Caroline Crook added two free throw baskets in the fourth for DWS, while Simms scored one off of a free throw. DeKalb West took the 12-6 victory.
The DWS Bulldogs would not be as fortunate, though the game would be closer. Buterbaugh would score the team's only point in the first quarter from a free throw, while TC came away with 11. Camden Goodall scored two three-pointers and a free throw, while Zeb Major and Maddox Njezie each had a two-point shot.
Kent had a three-point basket for the Bulldogs in the second quarter, with Buterbaugh getting a two-point shot. TC would tack on 12 more points, with Major getting a two-pointer and a free throw, Goodall, Spencer Hayes, and Blake Wolderf each gatting a two-point basket, and Njezie a free throw point. TC was up at the half, 23-6.
Buterbaugh and Kent each had a two-point shot in the third quarter, with Ben Driver adding a free throw point. TC was held to three points, a two-pointer and free throw by Major. The Bulldogs cut the lead, 26-11.
The Bulldogs put up six more points in the fourth, a three-point basket by Kent, and a two-pointer and free throw by Buterbaugh. Njezie had a three-pointer for TC. It was more than enough, with Tuckers Crossroads taking the 29-17 win.
