Hard week for DeKalb West teams

The DeKalb West School teams were on the road for one series of games last week, then at home for two more. The week turned out to be a tough one for both the girls and boys.
On Dec. 9, the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs traveled to Gordonsville, where points were hard to come by. The girls played first, and opened with a tough first period. The Lady Bulldogs scored only one point, coming from a free throw. Gordonsville had eight points and the early lead.
In the second period, DWS came away with four points, including a two-pointer by Carrigan Chapman. Gordonsville had nine, and increased their lead into the half, 17-5.
The Lady Bulldogs were held scoreless in the third period, while Gordonsville began to nail the lid on the game. They scored 10 points and took a 27-5 lead.
DWS had four points in the fourth, three of which came from a three-pointer by Lydia Brown. Gordonsville had six points and a 33-9 victory.
Brown went two for four on free throws, while Addison Oakley went one for three. Shelby Clayborn was one for two.
In the boys’ game, the score was much closer, though Gordonsville managed to be consistent at the hoop. The Bulldogs took the lead in the first period, scoring seven points with a three-pointer by Jacob Frazier, and two-pointers by Damien Dishman and Brady Driver. Gordonsville had four points.
In the second period Gordonsville made a comeback, scoring 14 points and holding the Bulldogs to only six. Dishman, Ethan Martin, and Paxton Butler each had a two-point shot. Gordonsville took the lead at the half, 18-13.
DWS came away with eight points in the third, including three-pointers by Martin and Butler. Gordonsville kept ahead by scoring nine points, with a lead of 27-21.
DeKalb was held scoreless in the fourth, while Gordonsville sealed the victory, scoring eight more points. Gordonsville took the win, 35-21.
Dishman and Driver were each one for two on free throws, while Jessie Smith was zero for two.
On Dec. 10, DWS took on Tuckers Crossroads in tough games for both the girls and boys. The Lady Bulldogs took the court first and came away with no points in the first period. Tuckers had seven and a big lead.
DeKalb finally got on the board in the second period, with Lydia Brown getting two two-point shots and Savannah Belcher getting one. Tuckers had nine and pulled their lead even further, 16-6.
Brown would get another two-pointer in the third period, but that would be the only points the Lady Bulldogs would see. Tuckers had 16 points and a 32-8 lead going into the fourth.
The Lady Bulldogs only had four points in the final period, including a two-pointer by Addison Oakley. Tuckers finished the game with another 16 points, coming away with a 48-12 win.
Brown was two for four on free throws, while Oakley was zero for two, and Carrigan Chapman was zero for one.
The boys played next and didn’t fare much better. The Bulldogs kept the game within striking distance however, making a surge late in the match.
The Bulldogs had four points at the end of the first period, including a two-pointer by Damien Dishman. Tuckers came away with five points and a narrow lead.
Dishman had another two-pointer in the second period, but that’s all the points DeKalb West could muster. Tuckers got six points and improved their lead going into the half, 11-6.
The Bulldogs turned up the heat coming out of the half, scoring 14 points in the third period. Dishman had four two-point shots, while Ethan Martin and Brady Driver each had one. Tuckers only scored 10, and their lead dwindled, 21-20.
Again, Dishman was the heavy scorer for DWS in the fourth, coming away with three two-pointers, while Martin and Jessie Smith each had one. Tuckers was able to get 13 points however, and inch by with a 34-30 victory.
Dishman was two for four on free throws, while Driver was one for three and Smith was one for two.
On Dec. 12, DeKalb West hosted Smith County. The girls took to the court first and right away fell behind. The Lady Bulldogs were held scoreless in the first period, while Smith put 15 points on the board.
The second period wasn’t much better, with DeKalb scoring three points, two from a two-pointer by Addison Oakley. Smith took 13 points, and the 28-3 lead at halftime.
In the third period, the Lady Bulldogs finally began to find the basket. DeKalb scored 10 points, with Brown getting four two-pointers, and Oakley one. Smith scored eight and kept the lead, 36-13.
The Lady Bulldogs had five points in the fourth, including a two-pointer by Oakley. Smith only scored two, but it was more than enough for the 38-18 win.
Oakley was three for eight on free throws, while Belcher went one for two. Brown was zero for two.
In the boys’ game, the Bulldogs would hold their own with Smith County until the second half. DWS scored six points in the first period, including two-point shots by Dishman and Driver. Smith also score six points.
The Bulldogs came away with eight points in the second, with three-pointers by Butler and Grayson Redmon, and a two-pointer by Martin. Smith kept pace, scoring eight and tying the game at the half, 14-14.
In the third period, things fell apart for the Bulldogs. DWS scored only four points from two two-pointers by Dishman, while Smith put up 18 points. Smith took the lead, 32-18.
Dishman, Martin, and Butler each had two-pointers in the fourth, but Smith came away with 10 points. Smith took the win, 42-24,
Dishman went two for three on free throws in the game.
