Steven Jennings pitched a one-hit shutout against Smith County in Smithville Monday, but John Maynard had to step in and save the day with a homer in the bottom of the seventh to keep the game from going into extra innings.
The DCHS Tigers took Smith County down 1-0 in a pitcher’s battle, with both teams collecting only one hit in the contest. Maynard led the Tigers with one hit in three at bats, and DeKalb committed no errors. Jennings struck out 17 Owls on his way to the win.
Meanwhile, The Owls got their revenge when DeKalb traveled to Carthage on Tuesday.
DeKalb County Tigers Varsity watched the game slip away early and couldn't recover in a 7-2 loss to Smith County on Tuesday. Smith County scored on a walk in the first inning and a walk by #33 in the first inning.
Smith County jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the first, scored another run in the second, and added three more in the fourth. The tigers managed two runs in the fourth.
Colter Norris, Jacob Self, Lee Randolph, Brady Hughes, and Derek Young each put in a single for DeKalb.
Although Colter Norris and Christian Pruitt combined to pitch a no-hitter against Lebanon High School Thursday, The Tigers still managed to drop a 4-0 game to the Blue Devils.
The Blue Devils scored two runs in the fourth inning after a walk by Norris, an error, and a couple of sacrifice hits, one in the fifth on two DeKalb errors, and one in the seventh on a walk by Pruitt and two sacrifice hits.
The Tigers out hit LHS 4-0, with Norris adding a double to his pitching performance. Pruitt, Logan Cornelius, and Lee Randolph all had one single each in the game.
The Tigers, now 17-7-1, will wind up the season with a visit from Upperman on May 1, then will begin post-season play with the first round of district tournament competition on May 5.
