If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball

One of the combantants in Saturday’s dodgeball tourney to benefit Tigerette softball puts his back into it as he hurls the ball at his opponent.

“If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball” – was the famous line from the definitive movie about the sport of dodgeball, oddly enough named “Dodgeball”.

No wrenches were thrown Saturday at DeKalb County High School gym but there were a lot of dodgeballs bouncing off the wall and body parts as the Tigerette softball team played host to its fourth annual dodgeball tournament.

According Tigerette softball booster Jamie Cripps, the event is a fundraiser held each year to assist in the expenses incurred by the high school program.

“We have 18 teams this year,” Cripps said, noting there are six members on each team, all trying to knock their opposition out by hitting them with a  dodgeball.

Under rules of the game, the team with the last man, or woman standing is the winner of the match. You are not allowed to hit your opponent in the face with the ball and both teams must stay behind a center-line. Catching the ball eliminates the opponent who threw the ball.

“We had four brackets this year,” she said. “Six to eight grade boys and girls, ninth to 12th grade girls and boys, a men’s and a women’s division.”

The tournament went for much of the day and Cripps said the event is something people look forward to each year, whether they play or watch. The balls, she noted, are the softer dodge balls.

“They don’t hurt as much when they hit you,” she noted.
