The DeKalb County Tigers had a disappointing homecoming night Friday after the Sequatchie County Indians took them down in a 20-3 game in a region matchup.

The first period ended in a stalemate. Both teams lost the ball on downs three times without approaching the end zone.

The defensive battle continued into the second quarter, with DeKalb finally coming within field goal range with a little more than eight minutes on the clock. The attempt by Matthew Poss, however, hit the right upright, and the score remained at 0-0.

The Indians broke a 50-yard touchdown run on their next possession to get on the board first with 8:27 on the clock in the second. Adam Pickett dashed across the goal line from mid-field, and Abraham Martinez put the extra point kick through to give Sequatchie a 7-0 advantage.

As the second period wound down, Sequatchie intercepted a Tyler Cantrell pass and drove the ball to the Tiger 17-yard line. Indian Quarterback Ethan Barker hit Hunter Davenport to for a touchdown, and Martinez placed another one through the uprights to put Sequatchie up 14-0 with a little more than a minute left in the first half.

DeKalb finally got some points up with 4:58 left in the third. An Indian fumble on a punt return gave the Tigers the ball on the Sequatchie 17, and when DeKalb was not able to put the ball across the goal line Matthew Poss hit a 33-yard field goal to bring the score to 14-3.

The Indians capped the game with a three yard Hunter Davenport run into the end zone with 11:30 on the clock in the fourth. A failed EP attempt gave Sequatchie a 20-3 lead, which they held onto until time ran out.

The Indians, are undefeated overall at 6-0, are now 3-0 in the region, and are ranked second in the state in Class 3A. The Tigers season record falls to 4-3 and DeKalb is 2-1 in the region after the loss, having beaten York Institute 28-21 and Smith County 34-32.

The Tigers will travel to Spencer next Friday night to meet the Grundy County Yellow Jackets, then play at home against the Upperman Bees on Oct. 21, and will visit Cannon County on Oct. 28 to wrap up the regular season.

All games kick off at 7 p.m.
