The DeKalb County High School Lady Tigers Soccer Team suffered two losses last week, one that looked to be a shut out, while another stayed tied until the final minute of the game.
On Aug. 27 the Lady Tigers took on Livingston Academy at the DCHS field. There, the game was scoreless until late in the first half when Livingston’s Savannah Gillentine came away with a goal with 13 minutes left on the clock.
Only three minutes later, Livingston’s Bailey Huck would strike, giving the Wildcats the 2-0 lead at the end of the half.
The second half was no better for the Lady Tigers. The team looked out of sync, with poor passing and ball control, and Livingston took advantage. Only seven minutes into the half, the Wildcats’ Jaci Maltimore scored with an assist from Bailee Wright.
DeKalb’s Jessica Billings had a busy night with 12 saves in the game, but it was too much for the goalie. Baltimore would come away with a second goal with 12 minutes left in the game, and it looked as if Livingston would come away with a shut-out.
With only seven minutes left in the game, the Lady Tigers would get their first points of the game with a goal by Haleigh Bass. While the Lady Tigers would avoid the shutout, 4-1 is where the score would remain, giving DeKalb their second loss of the season.
When asked about the team’s performance after the game, Coach Dylan Kleparek told the Review it all goes back to inexperience. "We’ve got a young team," Coach K explained. "Our execution was not there. We came out on fire and our hustle was making up for our mistakes, but then we started getting tired. Towards the end we got a little adrenaline back and started pushing a little harder, but we still weren’t executing like we needed to execute."
"We can make up for a lot of mistakes with some hustle, but we can’t do that for eighty minutes," Coach K continued. "That’s not going to happen. We’ve got to really work on our execution. We had random kicks, and soccer is not a game of random kicks. You have to be calculated in your method of getting the ball down the field. Tonight that didn’t happen."
On Aug. 29, the Lady Tigers were on the road again, this time traveling to Madison to face Goodpasture. There, the Lady Tigers battled until the last minutes of the game.
It was the Lady Cougars that would take the early lead, with Katelyn Jones getting a goal only two minutes into the game.
DeKalb’s Haleigh Bass would tie things up 15 minutes later with an assist from Angeles Soto.
Goodpasture’s Katie Roberson would give the lead back to the Lady Cougars with 12 minutes left in the first half. The 2-1 score would remain as the half ended.
The second half was played to a stalemate until Bass again tied the score with an assist from Kamien Sparks.
The game went into the final minute of play before the Lady Cougars’ Micah Holmes came away with a goal and gave Goodpasture the 3-2 win.
Lady Tigers’ Goalie, Billings, had six saves in the game.
The Lady Tigers’ next game is Sept. 6, at Merrol Hyde in Hendersonville.
