The DeKalb County Tiger soccer club is still looking for its second win of the season after being downed on their home pitch by district foe Cumberland County Thursday evening, 5-2.
Cumberland got off to a quick start when Drew Davidson put one in the back of the Tiger net in the 14th minute. His goal was followed just two minutes later by a laser shot by Jose Castaneda.
However, DeKalb would respond in the 34th
minute of the first half when Alex Avina Colwell put one past the Jet goalie
with an assist from Alan Munoz. Colwell would repeat the feat eight minutes
later, leaving the score tied at two at the half.
The second half ended up being all Jets as Aiden Zeino wasted no time, booting in the go-ahead goal at the 60th minute. Drew Davidson added to the lead four minutes later and then finished his hat trick in the 74th minute. DeKalb goalie Wesley Carpenter made seven saves during the tilt.
The loss came after the Tigers finished in a 2-2 tie at Macon County in a game where DeKalb had to scramble at the end just to get the draw.
All the scoring in the Macon County game happened in the second half as Joe Villanueva got a goal in the 50th minute while Jared Hill swished one into the net three minutes later.
Luke Bryant responded in the 56th minute with an assist from Andrew Fuson and Alan Munoz tied the affair in th e79th minute. Wesley Carpenter made 11 saves in goal.
The loss leaves DeKalb at 1-4-3 on the season, their only win coming March 17 at the Smoky Mountain Cup when they beat Franklin County, 3-1. Since that time they have tied Warren County, 2-2 and Merrol Hyde, 1-1. They then lost to Coffee County, 1-2 and finished in a draw with Macon County, 2-2. All but two games have been played on the road this season. The Tigers return home Thursday at play host to district rival Upperman, the same team that upset them last season in the district finals, toppling them from the state’s number-one ranking.
