The DeKalb County High School Tigerettes Softball team fell behind early in a game against Upperman last week and would not be able to rebound, taking a 6-4 loss.
On Tuesday, April 6, the Lady Bees got on scoreboard first at the bottom of the first inning. After a single, then a double had runners at second and third, a batter reached after a ground ball and an error by pitcher Ellie Cripps. The third base runner scored.
Then, an Upperman single, on a ground ball to left fielder Emma Martin, resulted in another run. After that, a line drive to Martin resulted in another runnder crossing home plate. By the time the first inning ended, DeKalb was down 3-0.
The Tigerettes would get into the game at their next at bat however. After Bri Murphy went down swinging, Cripps was hit by a pitch and took first base, but courtesy runner Layla Walker was soon called out after trying to steal second. With two outs it looked as if DeKalb would again be held off the board.
Next at bat, Kennedy Polk, walked, then Morgan Walker hit a ground ball and reached on an error by the Upperman shortstop. Next up, after Emma Johnson walked and loaded the bases, Jacey Hatfield doubled on a hard ground ball to left field, bringing home Polk and Walker. DeKalb had cut the lead, 3-2.
At the bottom of the second, once again Emma Martin saw a lot of action. The Lady Bees' first batter doubled on a line drive to left field, then after a pop up out to Polk, an Upperman batter once again doubled on a line drive to Martin. Upperman added to their lead, 4-2.
The bats fell silent for both teams until the top of the sixth inning. Emma Martin singled on a ground ball to center field, then, Murphy hit a ground ball and reached on an error by the pitcher. As Cripps came up to bat, Murphy would claim a steal of second, then Martin scored on steal of home. Cripps would ground out on a hit to second base, then Elaina Turner went down swinging, but once again the Tigerettes had cup the lead to one.
The Tigerettes seemed to be back in the game at the bottom of the sixth, getting two outs right off the bat, but errors would plague the team before they could end the inning. The next batter hit a fly ball and reached on an error by Hatfield, then Upperman reached on a ground ball and error by second baseman Johnson. The next hitter singled on a line drive to right fielder Aniston Farler , bringing home one runner, then the next batter singled on a line drive to left fielder Martin as another runner scored. Before DeKalb could end the inning, Upperman was back up, 6-3.
The Tigerettes had one last chance as they entered the seventh inning. First up, Morgan Walker was walked, then Johnson singled on a fly ball to right field. Hatfield would then go down swinging, then Aly Griffith was out on infield fly to second base.
Next up, Farler, singled on a hard ground ball to right field, bringing Walker home, but that would be the last points DeKalb would see. Murphy would go down swinging, ending the inning and the game.
Ellie Cripps took the loss for the Tigerettes. She lasted six innings, allowing ten hits and six runs, while striking out two.
The Upperman pitcher allowed two hits and two runs over one and two-thirds innings, striking out three.
Emma Johnson went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead DeKalb in hits. Upperman tallied ten hits in the game.
