The DeKalb West School Lady Bulldogs are in full swing with their basketball season, with several games in the books.
On Oct. 28-29 the girls hosted New Middleton and Defeated to open their season.
On the first day the Lady Bulldogs took on New Middleton, and came away with a 22-13 victory.
DWS had eight points in the first quarter, with Lydia Brown getting three two-pointers while Addison Oakley had one. New Middleton was held scoreless.
New Middleton inched closer in the second quarter, getting a three-pointer while Brown got a two-point shot for DWS. The Lady Bulldogs held the lead into the half, 10-3.
Carnigan Chapman had two two-point shots for the Lady Bulldogs in the third quarter, with Brown also getting a two-pointer and getting two points on free throws. The DWS lead increased to 18-3 as the fourth quarter began.
Savannah Belcher and Ashley Reynolds would each have two-point shots in the fourth quarter to bring the Lady Bulldogs up to 22. New Middleton would make things interesting by scoring 10 points in the fourth, but it was not enough. DeKalb West came away with the win, 22-13.
The following day the Lady Bulldogs faced Defeated Elementary in what would be a much tougher game for the girls.
Chapman got DeKalb West’s only points of the first quarter with a two-point shot, compared to eight points by Defeated. DWS would be scoreless in the second quarter, with Defeated coming away with 10.
Defeated really turned it on in the third quarter, getting 19 points to DWS’s five. Oakley had a two-point shot in the third quarter for DeKalb West. Belcher got one free throw on two attempts, while Brown went two for two.
Defeated would seal the win in the fourth quarter, coming away with 12 points and keeping the Lady Bulldogs out of the hoop. Defeated would get the win, 49-7.
On Nov. 4 the Lady Bulldogs traveled to Tuckers Crossroad where they played another tough game.
Tuckers’ came out strong, scoring 14 points in the first quarter. DWS had only three points in the first quarter with Chapman getting the only two-point shot.
Tuckers’ kept the heat up as the game went on, scoring 12 points in the second quarter and 14 more in the third. They would also keep the Lady Bulldogs out of the hoops, with a 40-3 lead going into the fourth.
Brown would get one more two-pointer in the fourth, while the rest of the DWS points came from free throws. Oakley would get two free throws out of five attempts. Brown went four for seven attempts, but it was not enough. Tuckers came away with the win, 42-10.
On Nov. 9 the team traveled to Smith County to face Forks River. The girls played hard, but it was too much for the Lady Bulldogs.
Forks dominated the first quarter, scoring 10 points to DWS’s four. Brown had the only two-pointer in the quarter for the Lady Bulldogs.
While the second quarter seemed better, DeKalb West held their opponent to only four points, the girls struggled to take a shot. The only two points of the quarter for the Lady Bulldogs would come from free throws, and Forks was up, 14-6.
The girls were held scoreless in the third quarter while Forks continued to pull away. Forks’ lead increased to 25-6.
Forks would score four more to end the game, with the Lady Bulldogs finding the hoop only once with a two-point shot from Brown. Forks took the win, 29-8.
Chapman went two for three on free throws, while Oakley went two for five.
