The DeKalb Lady Saints have joined the boys’ squad in a strong start to the 2019-20 season as they are out of the gate with a 4-2 record.

The path hasn’t been easy’ however, as they had to survive an overtime test in their recent game against Cannon County, winning the tilt 35-32 thanks to the heroics of Avery Agee from the free throw line during overtime.

It was a back-and-forth affair against the Lady Tigers as DeKalb got out to an 8-7 advantage In the first quarter only to find themselves down 16-15 at the half. Ella VanVraken had seven of her 10 in the first half, helping the Lady Saints keep pace against Cannon County. The DeKalb girls were able to take an advantage by the end of the third, leading 21-20. Cadee Griffith had four of her team high 12 points in the third. However, Cannon was able to even the score by the buzzer despite four more points from Griffith, forcing overtime.

In overtime it was Agee who slammed the door shut on Cannon as she toed the free throw line and made three of five. That, combined with two more from Griffith was enough to seal the deal.

In their recent win over Baxter, it was the VanVraken girls who led the way as Ella had 13 points in the Lady Saints’ 41-35 victory. Along with a five point first quarter, VanVraken was four-for-four from the foul line down the stretch in the fourth when Baxter threatened a comeback. Helping with the win was another VanVraken as Chloe VanVraken had nine points, all three pointers.
