The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints extended their season last week by winning the first round of the James C. Haile State Tournament in Murfreesboro, only to fall later in the second game.
On Jan. 18, the girls faced off with Lewisburg Middle School in a battle that looked bleak for the Lady Saints in the first half. In the first period, DeKalb only scored four points, including a two-point basket by Julia Curtis. Lewisburg had 10 points and the early lead.
The Lady Saints scored seven points in the second period, while holding Lewisburg to five. Joni Robinson had a three-point goal, while Abby Evans had a two-pointer. Lewisburg still held the lead at halftime, 15-11.
Again, Lewisburg was held to five points in the third period, while DeKalb pulled ahead, scoring 11. Curtis had two two-point baskets, while Madison Parsley, Robinson, and Macy Hedge each had one. DMS took the lead, 22-20.
The Lady Saints put the pressure on in the fourth period, scoring 15 points. Robinson had a two two-pointers and a three-pointer, while Evans and Curtis each had a two-point basket. Lewisburg was held to only five points, giving DeKalb a 37-25 victory.
Robinson went five for 10 on free throws, while Parsley was three for six. Evans was one for one, and Hedge and Curtis were each zero for one.
On Jan. 25, the Lady Saints returned to Murfreesboro, this time to take on West Tullahoma. Tullahoma came out with the lead in the first period, scoring 11 points to DeKalb’s five. Curtis had two two-pointers.
The Lady Saints scored eight points in the second period, including two-pointers by Parsley, Hedge, and Curtis. Tullahoma increased their lead, scoring 10 points and taking a 21-13 lead at halftime.
DeKalb inched a little closer in the third period, scoring six and holding Tullahoma to four. Parsley and Robinson each had two-point goals.
The Lady Saints got in a rhythm in the fourth, scoring 11 points. Robinson and Hedge each had a two and three-point basket, while Parsley had a two-pointer. It was not enough however, with Tullahoma getting 10 points and the 35-30 win.
Sophie Cripps went two for four on free throws, while Robinson was two for three. Curtis was zero for two, and Evans one for two.
