The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints faced Van Buren Middle at the Mike Braswell Gymnasium in Smithville on Nov. 16, sending the Eagles back to Spencer with a 50-23 loss.
DMS began strong, outscoring Van Buren 18-5 in the first period of the game, cementing a lead they would hold onto for the remainder of the contest. Emme Colwell scored seven points in the period, sinking two free throws, a two-pointer and a three-pointer. Julia Curtis put in four points on two two-pointers, Mya Ruch dropped a three-pointer in, and Megan Walker scored two. Lera Britt and Kadee Ferrell hit a free throw each.
The Ladies from DeKalb continued to pour it on in the second, putting 14 points on the board while only allowing Van Buren to score four.
Curtis contributed six points on three two pointers, Ruch and Ferrell both added three-pointers, and Walker put in a two-point shot. The Lady Saints took a 32-9 lead into half time.
DMS continued to dominate in a 7-5 third period, with Ferrell dropping in a two-pointer and a free throw, Britt hitting a two-pointer and Curtis and Kenzi France adding one point each on free throws, and the Lady Saints maintained a 39-14 lead going into the fourth period.
The final quarter of the contest saw DeKalb outpace the Eagles 11-9.
Kennedy Agee put four points in for the Lady Saints with two two-point shots, and Megan Cantrell hit a three-pointer. Ferrell and Hannah Winningham added two-pointers to round out the Dekalb win.
Curtis led the Lady Saints offense with 11 points in the game, Ferrell added nine, Colwell seven, and Ruch scored six. Agee and Walker put four points each in for DeKalb, while Britt and Cantrell added three, Winningham two, and France one.
The Lady Saints then squared off on the road with the Warren County Middle School Lady Pioneers on Nov. 20, serving up a 28-7 whoopin’ to the team from McMinnville.
Dekalb shot ahead early in the game, outpacing the Lady Pioneers 10-2 in the first period of play. Ruch dropped in two three-pointers in the period, while Britt hit three free throws and Curtis added one point on a foul shot.
DMS only scored five points in the second period, but held Warren to two. Ruch came in with another three-pointer, while Curtis hit two free throws. The score at half time stood at 15-4 DeKalb.
The momentum continued in the second half for DMS, as they scored nine points in the third while allowing the Lady Pioneers only three. Anna Chew hit a three-pointer and a foul shot for DeKalb, Ruch dropped in another three-point shot, and Walker hit a two-point bucket to bring the score to 24-7 DeKalb.
The Lady Saints put four points up in the final period of the game, while Warren went scoreless. Curtis was responsible for all four points, sinking a two-pointer and two free throws. Ruch led the DeKalb offense, scoring 12 points in the contest, while Curtis added seven, Chew put in four, Britt contributed three, and Walker scored two.
The Lady Saints, now 8-2 on the season, will travel to Watertown on Nov. 30 to face the Lady Purple Tigers at 6 p.m.
