The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints basketball team hasn’t quite finished its season yet. On Feb. 5, the team was on hand at the DCHS Tigers and Lady Tigers home game and was recognized for taking second place at the James C. Haile State Tournament in Murfreesboro. The next evening, the team was participating in the TNT State Tournament in Springfield, where they once again moved into the championship bracket.
On Feb. 6, the Lady Saints traveled to Robertson County to take on the host team of the TNT Tournament, the Springfield Yellow Jackets. The game would start out slow for the Lady Saints, but the team would soon get in sync.
DeKalb scored six points in the first period, with Macy Hedge and Lera Britt each getting a two-point basket, while Mya Ruch added a couple of free throws. The Yellow Jackets matched DMS, also scoring six points.
Joni Robinson got on the board in the second period with a pair of three-pointers, while Julia Curtis came away with four free throw points. Defensively, Springfield was held to only two points, giving DeKalb a 16-8 halftime lead.
Things just kept getting better for the Lady Saints in the third period. The girls scored 13 points, with Robinson, Curtis, and Emme Colwell each getting a three-point shot, while Madison Parsley and Ruch each got a two-pointer. The Yellow Jackets stayed in the game scoring nine points, but DeKalb’s lead increased, 29-17.
DMS scored 14 points in the fourth period, with Curtis taking a two and three-point basket, while Hedge and Sarah Anne Colwell each got a pair of two-pointers. Britt added a point from a free throw. Springfield was held to only eight points, giving DeKalb the 43-25 victory.
Curtis was four for four on free throws, while Ruch was two for three. Britt was one for two.
The Lady Saints will return to Springfield on Feb. 21, to battle for the championship title. The game begins at 6 PM.
