Lady Saint Hannah Brown makes a run for third base as DMS opened their season at home against the Lionettes.



The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints softball season got underway last week, with the team playing its first game at home against Cannon County. The hometown crowd was out in force to see the girls get their first big win.

On Thursday, March 3, DMS took on the Lionettes and both would get off to a slow start. Cannon would get two on base before coming back on the field, then the Lady Saints would see only Hannah Brown reach second before they were back out of the dugout.

Cannon County would see one runner touch home plate in the second inning, before they went three and out, the Lady Saints started to get in gear. With two outs on the board, Sophie Adcock would score followed by Allie Estes. Before the inning was over, Lillie Young would make it to third, while Zayleigh Washer was on second.

The Lionettes would move through their whole lineup at their next at bats, scoring six more runs before DeKalb could get off the field. At the bottom of the third, DeKalb was down 7-2.

Sydney Polk would take a base after being hit by a pitch, then Brooklyn Fuson and Michelle Lotspeich would each reach on singles. Maggie Hendrixson would then get on first with another wild pitch, sending Polk home. Adcock would then single sending Fuson home, followed by a double by Estes sending Lotspeich and Hendrixson home. At the end of three the Lady Saints were up 8-7.

Cannon would get two runners on base at the top of the fourth, but the Lady Saints would get off the field holding them to no runs.

DeKalb would then pick up where they left off. Fuson would get on with a walk, then Lotspeich would come away with a double, but would be caught at third. Hendrixson would also walk, then Adcock was hit by a pitch. Estes would get a single, sending Fuson home, then Young would double, sending Hendrixson and Adcock home. Washer would then walk, followed by Brown who got an easy trip to first base. Polk would then walk, followed by a double by Fuson.

In the end, the Lady Saints would seal their opening game with a 16-7 victory.
