Cold weather may still be rearing its ugly head but softball season is under way in DeKalb County and the DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints have been on the diamond with some exciting action.

On Monday, March 6, the Lady Saints traveled to Gordonsville where they would come away with a victory.

Gordonsville would get on the board first, scoring one run in the bottom of the second inning.

The Lady Saints would get things going in the third, when Maggie Hendrixson, Sophie Adcock, and Brooklyn Fuson all walked in succession, followed by a triple by Hannah Brown. Gordonsville would be held to a three and out and at the end of three DMS was up 3-1.

DeKalb would continue where they left off in the fourth with Lillie Young hitting a single, followed by an easy walk by Lakelyn Nelson. With two outs on the board, Hendrixson hit a double, driving in two runs, followed by walks by Adcock and Fuson. All three would make their way across home plate as Brown came away with a single. The Lady Saints were up 8-1.

Gordonsville would try to get back into the game at the end of the fourth, scoring three more runs, but that would be as far as they would get. DeKalb would claim the 8-4 win.

The following day, the ladies were back on the road, this time traveling to Algood where DMS would play a game that would come down to the final inning.

The Lady Saints would light up the scoreboard first, scoring two runs at the top of the first. Hendrixson got an easy trip to first with a walk, later followed by a home run by Brown. Allie Estes would get a triple before DeKalb’s time at bat was ended. They were up 2-0.

Algood’s time at bat was more fruitful, scoring four runs and taking the 4-2 lead by the end of one.

Nelson would walk to first at the beginning of the second inning, followed by a single by Jerusalem Aldino. Liliana Judkins would then hit a double, driving Aldino home. The Lady Saints had cut the lead, 4-3.

Algood would add one more run at the bottom of the second, again extending their lead, 5-3.

The Lady Saints would be held off of the scoreboard in the third, while Algood again got one runner across home plate for a 6-3 lead.

Aldino would start the fourth inning with a double, followed by a double by Judkins. That would be as far as DeKalb would get, before Algood got off the field. Algood was up 6-4.

Despite getting a runner all the way to third at the bottom of the fourth, Algood would be held off the board as the Lady Saints got off the field. DMS had one last chance at bat.

With one out on the board, Young hit a triple, followed by a RBI single by Nelson. Aldino would reach with a single, but that would be as far as the team could reach. In the end, the Lady Saints would fall one point short, 6-5.

The following Thursday, both teams would face each other again, this time to the Lady Saints’ home field. It would be another close game.

Algood would strike first, scoring one run at the top of the first.

DMS would answer at their first at bat, with Hendrixson walking to first, then stealing second. Estes would then hit a double, sending Hendrixson home. By the end of one, the game was tied 1-1.

Algood was held to a three and out at the top of the second inning, while the Lady Saints decided to put some distance on the board. Aldino got a walk, then stole second, later followed by Hendrixson who took a base after a wild pitch. Nelson would hit a single and steal second as Nelson stole third. Estes would get a walk, loading the bases, followed by an infield single by brown. The Lady Saints would end up putting three runs on the scoreboard, extending their lead, 4-1.

The action wouldn’t pick back up until the top of the fourth when Algood made a surge. Their bats got hot, and with a string of singles and doubles, Algood put seven more points on the board, taking the 8-4 lead.

Not to be outdone, the Lady Saints’ bats came to life as well at the bottom of the fourth. Brown, Young, and Fuson each came away with consecutive singles, later followed by a single by Aldino and a walk by Judkins. Hendrixson would then take a base by a wild pitch, followed by a single by Nelson. The Lady Saints had reclaimed the lead, 9-8.

Algood would have one more time at bat, but DMS would hold on for the win.

On Friday, March 10, the Lady Saints were again on their home field, this time hosting a tough team from Warren County. It would be a tough game for the local team.

Warren County would get on the board at the top of the first, scoring two runs, while DMS was held to a three and out.

At the top of the second, Warren added yet another run to the board, though the Lady Saints got things going as they came off the field. Brown came away with a single, later followed by a double by Fuson. Adcock came away with a single, followed by a base hit by Aldino. At the end of two, the Lady Saints were tied, 3-3.

It was at the top of the third that the bottom fell out of the game for the Lady Saints. Warrens’ bats came to life and put eight more runs on the board. Before the Lady Saints could get off the field, Warren was up, 11-3.

The Lady Saints would add two more runs at the bottom of the third. After a single by Nelson and a triple by Brown, Fuson was hit by a pitch and Adcock got a walk. Unfortunately, that would be the last points the team would see in the game.

Warren would add two more runs in the fourth, and hold on for the 13-5 win.
