The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints softball team played a couple of games last week, both on the road. If you like watching runners jog across home plate, these were the games for you as both were high-scoring.
On Monday, March 21, the girls traveled to Avery Trace where the team played a game that seemed like it had a marathon of runners.
Zayleigh Washer started things off for the Lady Saints at the top of the first, reaching on a single. Hannah Brown was next and came away with a home run. Sydney Polk would get a single, then Brooklyn Fuson would get an easy trip to first with a walk. Michelle Lotspeich would then single, followed by Maggie Hendrixson getting a HBP, sending Polk home. Allison Estes would single on a hit to left, as Fuson came home, but Lotspeich would be caught at third. By the time Avery Trace got off the field, DeKalb was up, 4-0.
Avery Trace would stay in the game as they came to bat, scoring three runs of their own, but the Lady Saints would add another run in the second, when Brown got another home run.
Avery Trace got rolling at the bottom of the second, scoring nine runs and commanding a 12-5 lead.
The Lady Saints kept in striking distance at the top of the third, after a Lotspeich single out to center, then Hendrixson again hit by a pitch. Sophie Adcock would reach on a single, and all three would make their way home before Avery Trace got off the field. DeKalb had cut the lead, 12-8.
At the bottom of the third, Avery Trace would add two more runs, then DMS would put the hammer down as they came back to the plate.
The Lady Saints would score 18 runs at the top of the fourth, with nearly the entire lineup getting two runs each. Washer, Brown, Fuson, Lotspeich, Hendrixson, Adcock, and Jerusalem Aldino each scored two runs in the inning, while Polk scored three times, and Estes scored once.
Avery Trace would manage just two more runs, and the Lady Saints would take the 26-16 victory.
The following day, the Lady Saints would again be on the road, this time taking on a tough Watertown team.
Washer would again start the lineup for DMS, hitting a single and eventually making her way to third. Fuson would get on with a HBP, but that would be as far as the Lady Saints would get. Watertown would put four runs on the board, taking the early lead.
DeKalb would get on the board in the second, after Adcock, Estes, and Aldino each walked. Washer would hit a double, but would later get caught stealing, then Brown would get a single, and Polk would take a HBP. Fuson would then single, followed by a single by Lotspeich. In the end, DMS put six runners across the plate. Watertown would get one run at the bottom of the inning, putting DMS on top, 6-5.
The Lady Saints would go three up, three down at their next at bat, then Watertown would add yet another run, tying the game, 6-6.
Again the Lady Saints went three up, three down at the top of the fourth, then Watertown put themselves over the top, scoring five more runs.
Hendrixson would score for the Lady Saints at the top of the fifth after reaching on a walk, but that would be all DeKalb could muster. Watertown took the 11-7 win.
