The DeKalb Middle School Lady Saints basketball team began their season last week, starting off with a home game against Sparta on Nov. 3. The girls looked strong for their opening game, getting a big win.
DeKalb took a 9-4 lead in the first period, with Joni Robinson taking a three-point shot and Macy Hedge getting a pair of two-pointers. Julia Curtis also came away with a two-point basket.
The Lady Saints added to their lead in the second period, getting five points, including two-pointers by Robinson and Curtis. Sparta would get only two points, giving DeKalb a 14-6 lead at halftime.
The game really opened up for the Lady Saints in the third period, with 23 points put on the board. Hedge took a pair of three-pointers, while Madison Parsley had a two and three-point basket. Robinson added another three-pointer, while Abbi Taylor had two two-pointers. Emme Colwell and Sarah Anne Colwell each had a two-point shot of their own. On defense, the Lady Saints held Sparta to only seven points, giving DeKalb a 37-13 lead at the end of three.
Robinson and Hedge each had two-pointers in the fourth to compliment the Lady Saints’ lead, while Sparta was held to only two points. Taylor went one for three on free throws, while Sarah Anne Colwell was one for two. DeKalb took the 43-15 win.
On Nov. 6, the Lady Saints were away for the first road game of the season, taking on Prescott Middle School in Cookeville. Again, the Lady Saints would show some muscle and get another impressive win.
DeKalb took the lead in the first period and never looked back. Curtis came away with a pair of two-point shots, while Mya Ruch got a three-pointer. Robinson also had a two-point shot. Prescott was held to only four points, giving DeKalb a 10-4 lead.
Things were even better in the second period, with the Lady Saints adding 15 more points to the scoreboard. Robinson and Brooke Wilson each had a three-pointer, while Ruch and Curtis each had a two-point shot. Prescott was held to only two points before the halftime buzzer sounded. DeKalb was up, 25-6.
Prescott outscored the Lady Saints in the third period, but only by one point. Parsley and Taylor each had a two-point basket in the period, while Prescott had five points. DeKalb still remained firmly in the lead, 29-11.
The Lady Saints finished out the game, winning the period and the game. DeKalb scored 10 points, with two two-pointers by Curtis, and two-point baskets by Sophie Cripps, Ruch, and Lena Britt. Prescott was held to only six points, giving DMS the 39-17 win.
Hedge was three for four on free throws, while Curtis was three for three. Parsley went zero for two.
