When DCHS Lady Tiger Head Basketball Coach Danny Fish was prepping his team for the season using a motion offense or read and react strategy, he knew it was going to take some time for it to take root.
Judging by the Lady Tigers opening night against Boyd Christian School, having crushed the Lady Broncos 61-15 Tuesday, Nov. 14, at home, he’s off to a good start.
“We’re trying to push tempo and create a lot of offense from our defense,” Fish said. “We’re an undersized team so we need to be fundamentally sound on the boards which creates opportunities for us and less opportunities from them.”
Although it might not have been perfect, it was pretty close as the Lady Tigers were heating it up both inside and out. Emme Colwell scored a game-high 17 points in the contest, with four three-point shots from outside the arc in the first half, followed closely by teammate Joni Robinson who dialed long distance for 12-of-her-16 total points.
At the break, the Lady Tigers were up by 23 points over the visiting Lady Broncos, going into the locker room 28-5.
“We didn’t shoot as well as we wanted to tonight but still shot pretty well,” said Fish. “We still need a little more inside post play and little bit more dribble penetration action which should open us up a little bit more overall it was a great night for a great cause and a great way to start the season.”
All game proceeds went to benefit Coach Jerry Foster, who is undergoing chemotherapy for cancer.
Spreading the ball around, nine Lady Tigers contributed to the final tally Tuesday.
From the foul line, DeKalb hit 6-of-8 for 75 percent while the Lady Broncos were only slightly behind with a 67 percentile hitting 4-out-of-6 from the charity stripe.
Rounding out DeKalb’s offense were Mallori Hart with 10 points, Leah Davis 6, Sophie Cripps 4 and Megan Cantrell, Mya Ruch, Kenzie France and Gracie Griffin all hitting 2 points each.
For the Lady Broncos, Erica Cantrell was top scorer with 5 points in the game.
