The Lady Tigers scored more points in the second quarter of their game in Monterey this past week than their hosts scored the entire game – the end result a one-sided 78-34 blowout by the red-hot DeKalb County squad.

The beginning of the game gave Monterey some hope as they stayed even with the 10-2 Lady Tigers, posting a 9-9 tie after the first quarter. However, the dam would burst in the second quarter as the DeKalb ladies used defense to produce offense, their full court press making it a major labor for the Monterey team to even get the ball across midcourt. The tenacious defense forced numerous turnovers, most of which were converted into points by the Lady Tigers who scored 35 points in the second, one more than their hosts scored in four quarters.

What was a single-digit tie just minutes before transformed into a 44-17 boat racing of the Monterey girls by half. The third held no magical properties for the home team as the DeKalb team, who hasn’t lost a game in the month of December, poured it on, holding a 63-25 after three, the game mercifully ending with the Lady Tigers cruising to the finish line with just 15 fourth quarter points.

Leading the way in scoring for the Lady Tigers was Lydia Brown with 17 with Kadee Ferrell close behind with 16. Mya Ruch had 11, Emme Colwell 10 and Megan Cantrell had nine. Rounding out scoring was Joni Robinson with five, Mallori Hart with 3 and Summer Crook with one.

The boys couldn’t make it a sweep of Monterey as they dropped to 1-11 with a 63-49 loss. The first quarter proved to be their undoing as they fell behind 19-7 after one, the Monterey lead only growing in the second as the hosts went to the locker room with a 37-21 advantage. The Tigers were able to carve the advantage to single digits at points of the second but were unable to reel in Monterey.

Josh Carlton registered a second exceptional game, leading his squad with 11 while Dallas Cook added nine to the mix. Evan Jones had eight, Nathan Adkins had seven and Noah Martin had four. Rounding out scoring for the Tigers were Dakota White and Jordan Young with three and Hayden Thomas and Brayden Antoniak with two.
