The DCHS Lady Tiger soccer team opened district tournament play on Oct. 12 with a bang, taking down Goodpasture Christian 2-1 in Smithville.

Angeles Soto came through with a goal in the seventh minute of the game to put the first point of the contest to put the first point on the board. Both defenses held fast until the 24th minute of play, when Goodpasture scored to tie the game at 1-1.

The defensive battle again held both teams at one point until the 43rd minute, when a Haleigh Bass goal put DeKalb back up by one point. Both offense could get the ball in the net for the remainder of the match, and the score stood at 2-1 at the final whistle.

The DeKalb Defense was aided by three saves from Goalie Jessica Billings.

The Lady Tigers’ luck did not hold for the second game of the tourney, however, and they suffered a crushing 9-0 defeat at the hands of Murfreesboro Central Magnet.

The Central Magnet offense beat the Lady Tigers up all night, and 21 saves by Billings weren’t enough to slow the Murfreesboro team down. Goals by Julea Bartch in the 21st and 27th minutes, by Madison Shea in the 27th and 39th minutes, and by Shannon Miller in the 30th minute, as well as goals by Sarah Peters in the 62nd and 67th minutes and by Sydney Flarian in the 72nd minute, were topped by an "own goal" by DeKalb in the 55th minute to eliminate DeKalb from the single-elimination tournament.

The Lady Tigers finish with an overall regular season record of 8-5-2. The team was placed second in the district with a district record of 2-1-1 at season’s end, and the loss against Central Magnet left them as fourth-place finishers in the tournament.
