The DCHS Lady Tigers soccer squad handed the Cannon County Lionettes a 12-2 walloping on Oct. 6.
DeKalb dominated the team from Cannon with seven goals and two assists, with Haleigh Bass leading the Lady Tiger offense with four points. Jerica Braswell put two goals in for the DeKalb offensive effort, while Angeles Soto, Nichole Walker, Morgan Odom, Alexis Nokes, Taylor Spare and Katie Hall each added one.
Jessica Billings racked up seven saves at goalie, while Sophie Hackett logged two saves for the Lady Tiger defense. Seven DeKalb players pitched in with assists.
Soto put the Lady Tigers ahead 1-0 when she put the first ball in the net in the fifth minute of play. Haleigh Bass brought the tally to 2-0 with an assist from Walker in the ninth minute.
Bass hit the mark again in the 25th minute with a Sarah Starnes assist, bringing the score to 3-0 DeKalb. Walker put another point on the board in the 26th minute with a Soto assist, and the Lady Tiger lead increased to 4-0.
A Braswell goal in the 28th minute added another point to the scoreboard for DeKalb, and Bass struck again in the 39th minute to increase the Lady tiger lead to 6-0. Lionette Livia Walker sunk one for Cannon in the 40th minute of play, but Bass avenged the goal in the 44th minute with a Braswell assist to bring the score to 7-1.
Braswell followed with another goal in 44th minute with an assist from Soto, and Morgan Odom added another point when she hit a free kick in the 54th minute to put DeKalb up 9-1. Alexis Nokes put one in with an assist from Bass in the 60th minute to bring the score to 10-1.
Another goal from Cannon’s Walker in the 64th minute bumped the Lionettes up to a 10-2 deficit, but Taylor Spare cancelled it out in the 66th minute with an assist from Jessica Billings. A score from Katie Hall in the 69th minute of the game brought the final tally to 12-2, and DeKalb took the win.
Meanwhile the Lady Tigers closed out the regular season by defeating Warren County 3-2 on Oct. 8.
Soto scored twice and Bass put one on the board for DeKalb. Soto, Bass, and Hall each had an assist in the match, while Jessica Billings saved 21 times at goalie for the Lady Tigers. Soto struck in the second minute of play, with an assist from Hall, to put DeKalb ahead early.
Warren did not answer until the 20th minute, when Sally Wilmore scored with an assist from Madison Mason. The 1-1 tie was broken when Bass booted one into the net with a Soto assist in the 31st minute.
DeKalb pushed ahead by a score of 3-1 when Bass returned the earlier favor by assisting Soto in the 37th minute. Natalie Reed put in Warren’s final goal in the 51st minute of play, bringing Warren within one point of the Lady Tigers.
The score remained 3-2 at the games end, however, bringing DeKalb’s overall regular season record to 8-5-2, and placing them second in the district with a district record of 2-1-1 going into the first round of tournament play against Goodpasture this week.
