The DeKalb County Lady Tigers soccer team’s regular season may have come to a close, but the team was still on the field last week during district tournament play. With single elimination in the tournament, the Lady Tigers played as underdogs, but managed to surprise a few people.
On Oct. 14 the Lady Tigers traveled to Livingston to take on the Lady Wildcats, who were favored in the game. But, DeKalb had other ideas, and right from the beginning it was clear that the Lady Tigers were there to play.
The game would go back and forth through the first half, with both sides taking shots at the goal. However, it would be the Lady Tigers who would strike first with Angeles Soto finding the net 13 minutes into the game.
Soto was not finished, and would score again with 15 minutes left in the first half, and again only two minutes later.
The Lady Wildcats would get a goal 36 minutes into the game, but that’s where the scoring would end. The rest of the game would be played to a stalemate, and DeKalb would come away with the upset win, 3-1.
Lady Tigers’ goalie Jessica Billings had 18 saves during the game.
The win advanced the Lady Tigers to the second round, to be played in Murfreesboro against Central Magnet. There, DeKalb would not fare as well.
CM would take the early lead with a goal by Jenna Mullen only six minutes into the game. The team would not look back, and Emmy Center would strike for Central Magnet nine minutes later. Emma Zijlstra would top off the score 22 minutes into play, giving the game its final score and Central Magnet the win, 3-0.
Billings would have 20 saves during the game.
