Lady Tigers sweep Watertown
Madison Martin
Coach Alley looks on as Madison Martin tries to set up a play against the Lady Purple Tigers of Watertown.

The DeKalb County High School Lady Tigers basketball team were back on their home court last week, taking on an old foe early in the week, then falling to one of the top teams in the state last Friday.

On Tuesday, January 10, the hometown crowd came out to see the Lady Tigers face off with the Lady Purple Tigers of Watertown. DeKalb would dominate through most of the game, but Watertown would surge in the fourth.

DeKalb put 17 on the board in the first period, with Avery Agee sinking three three-point baskets, while Ella VanVranken hit a two-pointer and a pair of three-pointers. Watertown was held to 10 points.

The Lady Tigers would repeat in the second period, scoring another 17 with a pair of three-point shots by both VanVranken and Dare Collins, and a two and three-point hoop by Chloe VanVranken. Watertown was held to 11, giving DeKalb the 34-21 halftime lead.

Ella VanVranken would add four two-pointers, a three-pointer and a free throw to the board for the Lady Tigers in the third, with Madison Martin getting on the board with a two-point basket. Agee had a free throw. Again, Watertown was held to 10, with DeKalb up, 49-31.

DeKalb would pad their lead with 11 more points in the fourth period. Ella VanVranken and Martin each had a two-pointer and a free throw, while Agee added a couple of free throw points. Camryn Branin also had a free throw shot. Watertown surged in the fourth with 20 points, but it would not be enough. DeKalb claimed the 60-51 victory.

Ella VanVranken put up 30 points in the game, with Agee coming away with 12. Martin and Collins each had six, Chloe VanVranken had five, and Branin had one.

It would be a much different outcome the following Friday night, as the Lady Tigers took on the high-scoring Lady Jets of Cumberland County.

The Lady Tigers put 10 points on the board in the first period, with Agee putting up a two and three-point basket. Chloe VanVranken had a three-point shot, while Ella Hendrixson sank a two-pointer. The Lady Jets surged forward with 18 points.

DeKalb put 12 points on the board in the second period, with Ella VanVranken sinking a three-pointer and a couple of two-point baskets, while Agee added a three-pointer and a couple of free throws. Cumberland dominated with 26 points, taking a 44-22 lead at the half.

The Lady Tigers seemed to fall apart in the third period. They would take their shots at the basket, but just couldn’t find the net. Tess Barton would score the team’s one lone point in the period on a free throw, while the Lady Jets added 23. Cumberland was up 67-23.

The Lady Jets just couldn’t miss, while defensively shutting down DeKalb. The Lady Tigers scored seven points in the fourth with a three-pointer and a free throw by Branin, and a three-point basket by Agee. Cumberland sealed the game shut with 10 more points, taking a 77-30 win.

Agee was the top scorer for DeKalb with 13 points, while Ella VanVranken was held to just seven. Branin had four, Hendrixson two, and Barton had one.
