Local golfers compete in state championship

Isaac Walker hit his last drive for DeKalb County High during competition at the state championships. He will now be playing for Cumberland University.

DeKalb County’s best high school golfers finished toward the front of the pack in a rain-shortened state championships at Willowbrook Country Club near Manchester this past week.

Isaac Walker finished with a six-over-par 78, leaving him in a tie for 26th place out of 63 competitors. His round came as rain forced the tournament to be condensed last week to an 18-hole contest instead of the planned 36 holes.

Walker is a senior who has committed to play golf for Cumberland University. This year marked the third year he has qualified for state, going forward this year after placing in the top three at the district tournament in Cookeville and the regionals in Cleveland.

Anna Chew will return for her senior year after competing at the state championships in Manchester this past week.
Anna Chew made her first appearance in the state tournament and was able to shoot an 82 which left her in a tie for 18th in the 48-competitor field. She is a junior and according to Coach John Pryor she has showed enormous improvement this year and he fully expects here to return to the state finals this coming year.

As for team titles, Science Hill won the boys’ state title and Lance Simpson of Knoxville-Farragut and Jackson Skeen of Science Hill finished in a tie for first in the boys’ singles. Station Camp won the girls’ title with Isabella Van der Biest of Dobyns-Bennett winning singles, shooting the overall best score of the day with a 67.
