DeKalb County athletes Cameron Miller and Evan Morse led their travel soccer team to a State Championship victory.
Their team, the Murfreesboro Soccer Club 2004 Strikers, played teams throughout the Middle Tennessee region from August to November to qualify for the Tennessee State Soccer Association Tournament. Just qualifying for the state tournament is a victory of its own as 20 teams from Memphis to the Tri-Cities competed for the opportunity to be one of the eight teams invited to the state tournament. The state tournament was held over two weekends, and Miller and Morse had to put their skills to the test as they battled against the state’s best teams.
Last season, their team lost in the final game to a team from Hermitage. This season, the two teams met again in the semi-final round, but this time the Strikers came out on top. The boys couldn’t celebrate yet though as they still had the final game to play against a strong Knoxville team. With Morse in the midfield and Miller playing outside back and midfielder, they helped their team win the championship.
“We have trained, conditioned, and practiced for the past two and a half years to reach this goal, and losing in the finals last season gave us that extra motivation to work even harder this year,” stated Evan.
In addition to winning the State Championship, their team also won the Bash in the ‘Boro Tournament in October and the Nashville Soccer Club Cup in August. Their state title includes an invitation to the US Youth Soccer President’s Cup in Texas next summer to compete against the winning teams from 11 southern states.
