Major League Begins Fall Season

By Chris Tramel

DeKalb Youth Baseball's Fall League kicked off last week with a couple of games in competitive Major League action.

On Tuesday, Sept. 8, the Athletics took on Rockies to kick things off. The game would be close right to the end.

The A's struck first, with Andrew Cathey, Zander Simpson, Anthony Moore, and Silas Kirksey each getting a run in the first inning. But when the Rockies came up to bat, they stayed right with them. Keegan Taylor, Ben Driver, Luke Johnson, Anderson Fortner, and Talon McCrary each scored.

The A's would go one, two, and three in the second inning, while J.W. Redmon added to the Rockies tally with a run. The Rockies were up, 6-4.

At the top of the third, Cathey, Reed Midgett, and Kirksey put the A's back in the lead, while it was the Rockies turn to go three and out.

In the fourth inning, the A's would get a couple of base hits, but would not be able to drive them home. Aiden Colwell and Michael Justice would get on base, but likewise would not be able to score.

Cathey came in with an A's run in the fifth inning, putting his team up 8-6, but the Rockies were still in the game. Driver, Johnson and Fortner each came in with a run, giving the Rockies a 9-8 lead.

The A's weren't finished though, with Wade Evans, Cooper Goodwin, and Rylan Vinson each touching home and regaining the lead. It all came down to the Rockies at the bottom of the sixth. Their bats fell cold as they went one, two, and three. The A's held on for the 11-9 win.

Kirksey was the winning pitcher, with Reed Midgett taking over in the third. Johnson, Taylor, Fortner, and Driver threw for the Rockies.

That same evening, the Braves faced off against the Diamondbacks in what would turn out to be a blowout.

The Braves would start things out, but would not be able to find their bats the whole game. The team would not go all the way through their batting lineup until the top of the fourth inning.

The Diamondbacks were hot from the start, with Austin Parker, Cooper Odom, Preston Taylor, and Nick Murphy scoring in the first inning, Elijah Florence in the second, Preston Cantrell and Drew Cook in the third, and Parker, Florence, and Javon Hefflin in the fourth. They would take a 10-0 shutout.

Preston Taylor was the winning pitcher, while Porter Hancock, Brantley Brooks, and Collin Donnell threw for the Braves.
