Pates Ford Marina played host to the TNT Watersports Wakefest last weekend bringing in locals and professional competitors from across the United States in the annual event which started in 2005 on Old Hickory Lake.
Since relocating to Pates Ford Marina in 2012, the event has experienced tremendous growth and is one of the largest wakeboarding tournaments in the Southeast.
“It was even bigger this year,” said Harvey Letson, TNT Watersports Pro Shop team manager. “It’s really wonderful we had so much participation, especially in the amateur field. Without that, there wouldn’t be a pro event.”
Prizes were awarded in nine divisions, including a $3,000 prize for top professional female winner Taylor Mccullough and a $7,500 prize for the top male J. D. Webb. Letson said they were already planning for next year, where a one-ride Shootout after the pro event for $50,000 is on the table.
“Across the lake families come to watch the event and there were about five times the amount of boats than last year,” said Letson.
Chad Lowe, a professional wakeboard competitor and coach who came to the event from California, reported Center Hill Lake was one of the most picturesque lakes he had ever seen in a post-event interview.
“I’d love to come back and spend a week there relaxing and wakeboarding. That would be great,” Lowe said.
Local area business providing lodging and servicing for the event, including Pates Ford Marina Cabins, Houseboats and Camp Sites and Rentals and The Retreat at Center Hill Lake, both reported large increases in business over the weekend.
Benjamin Brown won the Outlaw division, Lane Powell won advanced, Jaron Sullivan took Intermediate, Spencer Sullivan won the Beginner division. In the women’s amateur category Jordan Wolfe took the top spot.
Carson McDaniel won the junior division and Kane Ward won best for the Grom.
This year’s sponsors include Bud Light, Austermiller Roofing, Malibu Boats, Fireball Whiskey, Pates Ford Marina, Fish Lipz Grill, Tootsies, Hyperlite and Signature Limo.
