Going undefeated throughout the inaugural year of the Smithville Church League, New Life had to do one thing to capture the league championship – beat the once beaten Nazarenes in the final. That didn’t happen.
Smithville Church of the Nazarene won the final game, denying New Life a perfect season as they claimed the league title.
New Life had completed the regular season at the Bill Page Field with a 12-0 record, putting them one game up on the Nazarene who was 10-1, their only loss coming during the regular season to New Life. The squads outpaced the rest of the league as Elizabeth Chapel took third with an 8-4 record while Refuge Church and Cumberland Presbyterian went 6-5. Rounding out the 10-team co-ed league was Smithville Church of Christ at 6-6, Calvary Baptist at 5-7, Smithville First Baptist at 3-9, Outreach Baptist at 1-10 and the Church of God at 0-10.
Organizers of the inaugural church league season say the Christian league was a great success and theyp plan to hold it again next year, playing from August until the end of October. There is also plans for a kid’s league to run from May to June.
