Pair of Heartbreakers for Saints

The DeKalb Middle School Saints basketball team were back on the hardwood last week, falling hard to Cannon County at home, then losing a pair of heartbreakers.

On Friday, November 4, the Saints were in their home gym where they hosted the visiting Cannon County Lions. The Saints would have trouble right from the start.

Kiece Hannah scored the only points for the Saints in the first period with a two-point basket, while the Lions jumped out with eight points.

Things didn’t get much better in the second period for DMS. Hannah sank a pair of two-pointers, while Ryan Lyons added a free throw, but Cannon came away with 17 points and a 25-7 halftime lead.

Hannah kept rolling for the Saints in the third, sinking three two-pointers, while Lyons had a two-point shot and a free throw. J.T. Summers also had a two-point basket. Cannon kept pushing forward with 14 points and a 39-18 lead.

Hayden Quarles got into the game for the Saints in the fourth period, hitting a pair of three-point shots, while Hannah, Hartley Hannah, and Aiden Summers each had a two-pointer. The Lions padded their lead with 16 and took the 55-30 win.

The following Tuesday, the Saints were back at home, this time taking on a tough Rickman team. The game would keep fans on the edge of their seats throughout.

The Saints were held scoreless in the first period, but only allowed Rickman a two-point basket.

DMS would get rolling in the second period, scoring nine points. Anthony Moore came away with a three-point shot, while Kiece Hannah added a pair of two-pointers. Cooper Odom also had a two-point basket. Rickman added to their lead with 11 points. They were up 13-9 at the half.

The Saints closed the gap a bit in the third period, scoring 11 points of their own. Hannah had three two-pointers and a free throw while Elliot Barnes had a pair of two-point shots. Rickman was held to 10 points, but were still up 23-20.

It all came down to the fourth period, where the Saints would put eight points on the board. Again, Hannah had three two-point baskets, while Barnes added one. Rickman was held to seven points, but it would be enough to claim the 30-28 win.

On Thursday, November 10, the Saints were on the road, traveling to McMinnville to take on the Warren County Pioneers. The Saints would jump out with a great start, but would slowly let the lead slip away.

The Saints came out on fire in the first period, putting 19 points on the board. Elliot Barnes had three three-point baskets and four free throw points. Hayden Quarles had a three-pointer, Kiece Hannah a two-pointer, and Luke Johnson added a free throw. The Pioneers were held to just seven points.

Things began to turn in the second period. Hannah put up the only points for the Saints with a pair of two-point baskets, while the Pioneers roared back with 11 points. DeKalb still held the lead at halftime, 23-18.

The Saints scored 10 points in the third period, with Hannah getting a couple of two-point shots and a free throw, while Barnes had another three-pointer. Anthony Moore had a two-point basket. The Pioneers kept coming, scoring 14 points cutting into DeKalb’s lead, 33-32.

It came down to the fourth period, where the Saints would add nine points to their tally. Hannah had a pair of two-point shots and a couple of free throws, while Barnes had a two-pointer of his own. J.T. Summers added a free throw point. Unfortunately, defensively DMS couldn’t hold back the Pioneers. Warren County scored 14 and took the 46-42 win.
