The DeKalb Junior Pro Pee Wee football team hit the road Saturday, traveling to Baxter to face the Upperman Stingers.
The Baxter Pee-Wee team jumped on the Junior Tigers early, breaking loose with a 70-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game. A successful conversion put the team from Baxter up 7-0 in the opening seconds of the contest.
The DeKalb offense, however, was quickly forced to punt on their first possession. The Stingers then drove 50 yards downfield on six plays, and while the point after attempt failed, the effort was good enough to increase Upperman’s lead to 13-0.
Quarterback Jon Travis Hendrix then led the Tiger offense in a six-play series in an attempt to answer the Stingers, but DeKalb stalled on third down. A punt handed the ball back to Upperman, who did not fail to make the most of the situation.
The Upperman offense blasted a 71-yard run on the first play of the series, taking a 19-0 lead to the locker room at half time.
The Tiger defense came to life in the second half, holding the Stingers scoreless. The 19-point lead the Stingers had built up proved to be DeKalb’s undoing, however, and despite a 65-yard run into the end zone by Nick Murphy in the fourth quarter and a good PAT conversion by Hendrix, DeKalb came home with its second loss of the season, 19-7.
The Pee Wee team will face the Monterey Wildcats Saturday in Baxter at 4 p.m.
