The Warren County Pioneers made it a sweep over DeKalb County this year as they built on their border battle upset during football season by defeating the Tiger basketball team 72-59 in Smithville this past week.
It was trouble from the start for the Tigers as Warren County came out blazing, taking a 22-11 lead after the first quarter with insult added to injury when Pioneer Jordan Young made a heave from half court to beat the buzzer to end the opening frame.
The Tigers were able to cut into the Pioneer lead a bit during the second period, all their damage coming in the last minute of the second as a series of events cut the Pioneer advantage to single digits. It all began with a Tiger layup and then an immediate steal just before the horn sounded, the quick four points setting the game at 38-27 at half.
The third quarter belonged to Dallas Cook as the Tiger went off, scoring five of his 11 points in the third. He also had a massive tomahawk spike block on a Pioneer shot that brought DCHS fans out of their seats. His energy helped spark a 10-3 run in the third that got the Tigers to one. DeKalb then took a 45-44 lead from the charity stripe.
While the house was rocking with the comeback, the Pioneers were not done as they came out with a vengeance in the fourth, going on an 11-0 run and claiming the game for good. Seven of the 11 came in the span of one minute, leaving the Tigers shell-shocked.
Luke Jenkins led the Tigers in scoring with 12 points while Dallas Cook had 11, Evan Jones 10, Brayden Antoniak 9, Michael Elswick and Jordan Young each had 5, Elishah Ramos 4, and Alan Munoz with 3 points.
