State Representative Michael Hale has introduced a House Joint Resolution which would honor and congratulate Conner Close of DeKalb County High School on scoring his 1,000th point in varsity basketball. Close reached the milestone in a home game against the Smith County Owls on December 12, 2023.
The House Joint Resolution 877 reads as follows:
WHEREAS, it is fitting that the members of this General Assembly should recognize those incredibly successful student athletes who have attained significant milestones in their careers; and
WHEREAS, Conner Close, a senior student and basketball player at DeKalb County High School (DCHS), is one such legendary athlete; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Close scored his 1,000th career point for the DCHS Tigers in the school's resounding win over Smith County High School in Smithville on December 12, 2023; and
WHEREAS, in the leadup to the game, Conner Close needed only five points to gain entry to the prestigious DCHS 1,000-point club; less than three minutes into the game, he had done it—scoring the first five points of the contest and etching his name forever in the annals of Tiger basketball history; and
WHEREAS, the game was stopped momentarily with 5:42 left in the first period to mark the accomplishment; Coach Joey Agee presented Conner Close a 1,000th point game ball as fellow players, family, friends, and fans gave him a standing ovation; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Close finished the night with 15 points and a total of 1,010 for his high school career as the Tigers defeated the Owls 66 to 56; and
WHEREAS, Conner Close has now claimed his rightful place among the most elite basketball players in DeKalb County High School history; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Close exemplifies the spirit, determination, and perseverance for which Tennesseans are notable, and he is richly deserving of our approbation on this special occasion; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE ONE HUNDRED THIRTEENTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE, THE SENATE CONCURRING, that we honor and congratulate Conner Close of DeKalb County High School on scoring his 1,000th point in varsity basketball and wish him all the best in his future endeavors, both on and off the court.
