Saints defeat Devils
MS Josh May runs
Duane Sherrill photo Josh May gallops toward the end zone, returning a Jackson County punt for a touchdown. The play was called back because of an illegal block but the DeKalb Middle School Saints would score a few plays later. They shut out Jackson County 42-0 and will play host to Smith County this Thursday.

DeKalb Middle School Saints running back Colby Barnes had over a 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter alone, the only thing stopping him from having 200 yards being his teammate Josh May who also racked up the yards and touchdowns as their squad crashed visiting Jackson County 42-0.

The rout was on from the third play from scrimmage as Barnes dashed 50 yards to daylight giving his squad an early 8-0 lead. His feat was followed by May going 45 yards for another TD just two minutes later.

“May would have had another touchdown but it was called back,” pointed out Saints Head Coach Justin Poteete, noting the flag-erased punt return touchdown was turned into a score two plays later as Barnes scored his second TD from scrimmage and etched his second 100-plus rushing day of the season.

Meanwhile, Jackson County, who beat the Saints last year, was unable to even manage a first down, not just in the first quarter, but the entire game. The domination of May and Barnes along with a long pass from quarterback Briz Trapp to Gabe Hollingsworth gave the Saints a 36-0 half-time lead.

“I thought did things right,” Poteete said. “We kind of starting slacking in the second half but overall we did pretty well.”

Under the mercy rule, the clock continued running in the second half, limiting the damage to 42-0. The Saints played most of its second team throughout the second half, even introducing some of them to action before half-time. The win gives the Saints a perfect 2-0 start as they host Smith County this Thursday.

“Smith County is solid,” Poteete said, noting he hopes fans will turn out in mass at 6:30 p.m. Thursday to see the Saints in their first conference game. “They are in our side of the conference so this will be a very big game.”
