The DeKalb Middle School Saints opened up their basketball season with a pair of dominating performances both on the road and at home.

On Tuesday, October 10, the Saints opened the season on the road in Spencer to take on Van Buren County. It would be a very good night for DMS.

The Saints came away with 26 points in the first period alone. Elliott Barnes had a two-point basket, a three-pointer, and three free-throw shots, while Hayden Quarles had a three-pointer and five free throws. Anthony Moore had four free throw points, while JT Summers and Cooper Odom each sank a two-point shot. Van Buren was held to just four points.

DMS continued on in the second period, with 18 more points on the board. Quarles had a two and three-point basket, while Odom added a pair of two-point shots. Barnes, Moore, and Preston Taylor each had a two-pointer, while Hartley Hannah added a pair of free-throw points. The Eagles were held to just two points, giving DMS the 44-6 halftime lead.

Elijah Mills got on the board for the Saints with a pair of two-point shots in the third period, while Reed Midgett and Carter Melson each had a two-pointer of their own. Van Buren came away with two points, giving DeKalb the 52-10 lead.

The Saints didn’t let up in the fourth, scoring another 16 points. Austin Parker hit a two and three-point shot, while Quarles had a three-pointer. Summers, Barnes, Midgett, and Keegan Taylor each had a two-point basket. The Eagles put 10 on the board, for from enough. The Saints claimed the 68-20 victory.

Quarles was the top scorer for DMS with 16 points, followed by Barnes who had 12.

The following Thursday the Saints held their home opener, hosting the Owls of Smith County. It would be another good night for DMS.

Once again DMS jumped out to a big lead in the first period. The Saints put 21 points on the board, with four two-point baskets by Barnes, three by Moore, and one each by Odom, Johnny Colwell, and Quarles. Preston Taylor had a free throw. The Owls were held to just two points.

The Saints added 10 points in the second period, with Preston Taylor hitting a pair of two-pointers, while Barnes had a three-point shot. Carter Melson sank a two-pointer, with Hannah Hartley getting a free throw. Smith managed four points, giving DeKalb the 31-6 halftime lead.

DMS continued where they had left off in the third period, adding 17 to the board. Barnes had a couple of two-point shots and a pair of free throws, while Hartley had a two a three-point basket. Summer had two two-pointers, while Melson had one. Smith scored just three points. The Saints were up, 48-8.

Gavin Frazier and Melson capped off the Saints’ score in the fourth, each with a two-point shot. Smith scored two points, giving the Saints the impressive 55-11 hometown win.
