It was basically a tale of two halves for the Saints last Tuesday evening when they faced Algood in consolation for third place in the division. The Saints could not have started much hotter, scoring 3 times in the first half and holding Algood at bay defensively. However, Algood adjusted in the second half and their offense roared to life. Algood’s offense and costly penalties and a turnover in the second half, sunk the Saints 30-36.
Algood recovered a muffed kick to begin the game but could do nothing offensively and was forced to punt. The Saints put together an impressive, 9-play, 73-yard drive capped off with a 23-yard Jesse Foutch touchdown run to put the Saints on the board as time expired in the first quarter. The point-after was no good but the Saints led 6-0.
Algood put together a nice drive of their own on the next series, going 50 yards on 8 plays to take the lead from the Saints, 8-6.
Cecil Ketchum would make Algood pay on the ensuing kickoff, running the ball all the way back for a Saints’ touchdown. This time DeKalb’s two-point conversion was good and with 4:23 left in the half, the Saints led 14-8.
Algood would muff the Saints kickoff and DeKalb would take over at Algood’s 40 yard-line. 6 plays later, Saints offensive lineman Chase Young would find the end zone for the first time this season from 1 yard out. Jesse Foutch would get the Saint’s two more points and with 0:53 left in the half, the Saints were seemingly in control, 22-8.
DeKalb would quickly lose that control, as Algood would score on its next four possessions.
Algood would break free on a 21-yard touchdown run as time expired in the half to inch closer at the break, 22-14, then take the second half kickoff back for a touchdown to make the score, 22-20. A costly holding penalty would stymy the Saints next drive and two plays later Algood would find the end-zone and two-point conversion again to take the lead from DeKalb, 28-20.
DeKalb would fumble on its next possession and Algood would take advantage again, rumbling 45 yards for another touchdown and two-point conversion to increase Algood’s lead to 36-22 with 0:22 left in the third quarter.
Both teams could do nothing offensively on their next two possessions, but the Saints would manage to put together a nice 8-play, 60-yard scoring drive to end the game 30-36 for DeKalb.
With the loss, DeKalb’s 2022 season ends with a record of 3-4.
