The DeKalb Middle School Saints basketball team only played one game last week, traveling to Watertown to take on the Purple Tigers. The game would stay close through the first half, then fall away for the Saints in the second.
The Saints took the early lead in the first period, scoring nine points to Watertown’s seven. Tanner Poss had a couple of two-point baskets, while Noah Gill and Michael Elswick each had one.
Watertown inched by in the second period, taking 10 points and holding DMS to only five. Nathan Atkins scored the only two-pointer in the period, with all other points coming from the free throw line. Watertown took a 17-14 lead going into halftime.
The Purple Tigers outscored DeKalb two to one in the third period, getting 16 points to the Saints’ eight. Colter Norris and Logan Cornelius each had a three-point basket, while Elswick had a two-pointer. Watertown was up, 33-22.
DMS scored nine points in the fourth period, with Poss getting a three-pointer, and Norris, Atkins, and Brayden Hart each getting a two-pointer. It was not enough. Watertown also scored nine, and took the 45-31 victory.
Hart was two for four on free throws, while Atkins was one for four. Gill was one for one, while Logan Cornelius was zero for two. Elswick was zero for one.
