The DeKalb Middle School Saints Soccer team has been preparing for their new season with a couple of preseason games. The team's first scheduled preseason game, set for February 26, had to be cancelled due to rain, but the Saints next two games show a promising season for DMS.
On Tuesday, March 2, the Saints traveled to White County, where DMS had a very good game. The first half was scoreless, with the Saints not connecting on multiple opportunities, but the team finally got on the board after a strike from 6th-grader Christian Hernandez. The Saints caught fire from then on, winning 9-0.
Juan Ortega had three goals in the game, while Christian Hernandez and Leo Delgado each had two. Axel Aranda and Cale Brown each had one goal. Axel Aranda and Aidan Malone each had two assists, while Christian Hernandez, Juan Ortega, Jose Muniz, and Christian Hernandez each had one.
The Junior Varsity team also won their match, 8-0.
The following Thursday, the team was again on the road, this time taking on Prescott Middle School. There, the team would be in a much closer match.
The Prescott Bulldogs struck first, going into halftime with a 1-0 lead, but in the second half the Saints put two quick goals on the board. Prescott countered with another goal of their own, tying the game 2-2.
With five minutes left in the game, Juan Ortega put in a strike from above the 18-yard box to push the Saints over the edge. The Saints took the 3-2 win, while the Junior Varsity team also won, 3-2.
The Saints open their regular season with a game at home on Friday, March 12. The game begins at 5:00 pm.
